Battle

Red Dragon uses fire-based attacks. Like most bosses, Red Dragon is immune to fractional damage and it absorbs fire damage.

All of Red Dragon's attacks target a single party member. Its Red Dragon Breath deals medium to high fire damage and it can follow up with another attack to the same person. Its Tail Whip is Red Dragon's weakest attack, but can be a threat to low-leveled characters. Dragon Fang is Red Dragon's most powerful attack.

Strategy

Elemental Materia partnered to a Fire Materia or Ifrit on the armor protects against Red Dragon's fire attacks. The Fire Ring can also be used. Bringing the Poison Materia is useful, especially if partnered with an Added Effect Materia to a party member's weapon.

It is a good idea to give Aeris a Restore linked with an All Materia so she can heal the party. Big Guard or Barrier and MBarrier can be used to soften its attacks.

Because all of Red Dragon's attacks hit a single party member, with the aid of Slow or a slower battle speed, the player can easily revive the Dragon's victims via Phoenix Downs and Life, enabling the use of Poison-stall strategies.

Etymology

A dragon is a legendary creature, typically with serpentine or reptilian traits, which is featured in the myths of many cultures.

Chromatic dragon is a classification of dragon in the role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons who are typically of evil alignment, in contrast to the metallic dragons, and their queen is Tiamat. White, black, green, blue and red dragons are the classic chromatic dragons. Final Fantasy has derived a lot of influence from D&D, especially the early series. Red dragons are the largest and most powerful of the classic chromatic dragons who regard other chromatic dragons as inferior and make home inside active volcanoes or mountains. Red dragons use their powerful breath first, followed by physical strikes, then magical attacks.

Trivia

  • How summons came to be is never explained within the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII except for some dummied lines from the original Final Fantasy VII. After obtaining the Bahamut Materia Sephiroth would have explained that during the times of the Ancients there were beings created by the Planet that sealed their life energy in Materia. It is suggested the Red Dragon turns itself into the Bahamut Materia upon defeat.[1]
