Red Dragons have a devastating Blaze attack, which deals Fire-based damage to all party members, as well as being physically powerful. Having the mages cast Ice-based spells and strong physical attacks can defeat a Red Dragon with ease.
Encounters
The most famous guardian in Mount Gulg, the Red Dragon is guarding a chest with Flame Armor, which may come handy in the fight with Marilith.
Long after Mount Gulg, the player may find the Red Dragon (among other dragons) in the Lifespring Grotto optional dungeon. There, Dark Bahamut gives the heroes the task of defeating a certain number of his dragon disciples.

White, black, green, blue and red dragons are the classic chromatic dragons. Final Fantasy has derived a lot of influence from D&D, especially the early series. Red dragons are the largest and most powerful of the classic chromatic dragons who regard other chromatic dragons as inferior and make home inside active volcanoes or mountains. Red dragons use their powerful breath first, followed by physical strikes, then magical attacks.
