Record Materia are a set of passive abilities for characters in Final Fantasy Record Keeper. While each character has a set of Record Materia that only they can acquire, they can be used by any character that has broken the first level cap of 50.
Acquiring Record Materia[]
The first Record Materia is always obtained by breaking the character's first level cap, whereas the second is acquired by breaking the character's second level cap and is obtained by chance, sometimes being restrained to only gain the Record Materia by battling in their own realm like Quina, and the third is acquired when a character can reach level 99.
Some characters released earlier in the game like Josef and Cloud have four Record Materia instead of three, in which case obtaining their second Record Materia does not require breaking their second level cap, but fulfilling specific requirements in battles, and their third and fourth Record Materia is acquired how other characters obtain their second and third respectively. Record Materia are not evenly distributed among characters in the game, as some characters can obtain up to four Record Materia, whereas others only can get one.
Legend Materia[]
Certain heroes are also able to equip a subset of Record Materia known as Legend Materia. Unlike normal Record Materia, however, Legend Materia must be captured from specific Relics by those heroes able to use them. Further, heroes may only use the Legend Materia assigned to them. However, each hero receives two additional slots to house Legend Materia upon the capture of at least one orb.

Materia means "matter" or "substance" in Latin, Spanish, and Italian; it also means "subject" in Italian and Spanish, and is the root of Portuguese "Matéria".
