Rapture is a Limit Break for Selphie in Final Fantasy VIII that removes all enemies from battle. It is one of her four unique Slot spells, the others being Full-cure, Wall, and The End. Slot is randomly available when Selphie is on low health or under Aura.
Mechanics[]
Rapture removes all enemies from battle, securing the player a win, unless the enemies are immune to Blow Away. Rapture ignores Reflect. Grat, Vysage, Lefty, Righty, Cactuar, Tonberry, Esthar Soldier (Terminator) (though Selphie cannot fight them), UFO?, PuPu, and bosses (besides Oilboyles, but Selphie cannot fight them in a boss encounter) are immune to this spell.
How often Rapture appears in Slot depends on Selphie's level and Crisis Level. Crisis Level is a hidden stat in the game; the lower Selphie's health, the more KO'd active party members she has, and the more ailments she is afflicted with, the higher the Crisis Level.

Use[]
Rapture is an instant win against most normal enemies, and so one of the especially desirable outcomes of Selphie's Slot. However, Slot is the most unpredictable Limit Break in the game and the player is likely better off not relying on it. Slot rolls random spells from a pool independent of Selphie's Luck stat, but high Crisis Level makes better spells more likely. Rapture is rare to appear in Slot, the best chance being when on high Crisis Level in her level 40s, 50s, and 60s, and lower Crisis Levels from there on.
Rapture is essentially a group-cast version of Quistis's Degenerator, which is more reliable as the player can count on being able to use it whenever her Limit Break pops up, allowing for instant-win strategies with Initiative equipped. Rapture is also inferior to Selphie's own The End, which works on enemies who resist Eject, but it is even rarer to appear in Slot than Rapture.
Rapture remains a good situational instant win ability throughout the game. It is the most useful when going through areas with random encounters. However, the player can simply disable random encounters with Enc-None (or with cheats in Remastered). Quistis's Degenerator is better when fighting enemies to item farm their drops or for level grinding on Island Closest to Hell. Rapture would be beneficial to appear against enemies in Deep Sea Research Center, but the player could simply use Quistis and Degenerator instead. When using two parties in the final dungeon, the player could place Selphie and Quistis in different teams to use their instant-win Limit Breaks against the encounters there, if they are not using Enc-None.
One trick to have Selphie stay safer when using Slot is to use Defend and then on her next turn use Slot (the player can tap to repeatedly try for a Limit Break when on low health). This keeps Selphie immune to physical damage while the player rolls though the spell options. The player can also summon Carbuncle to protect from magic damage, but this only works against regular spells, not against all enemy-exclusive magic abilities.
Etymology[]
rapture refers to the belief that either before, or simultaneously with, the Second Coming of Jesus Christ to Earth, believers who have died will be raised and believers who are still alive and remain shall be caught up together with them (the resurrected dead believers) in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air.
In Christian eschatology theIts name in Japanese is the -ga variant of the Float spell.
