Revives target.
Description
Raise is a White Magic spell in Final Fantasy V. It is the basic revival spell that brings an ally back to life at critical HP. When used on undead targets, it has a ~50% chance to instantly kill them. Raise is usable by the White and Red Magic skillsets (and can be used twice with Dualcast). It is also one of the spells that can be cast for free from the Wonder Wand.
Obtained[]
Raise can be purchased for 700 gil at Karnak or Jachol. Karnak is the earliest place Raise can be obtained. Once it is purchased, it can be used by any of the skillsets with the spell.
Another way to cast Raise is to use the Sage Staff in battle as an item.
Mechanics[]
When used on a KO'd ally, it will revive them at critical HP condition. If used against an ally who is not KO'd, the spell will miss.
Against a non-Heavy undead enemy, Raise has a chance to kill them even if they resist instant death. On an undead ally, or a Heavy undead enemy, it will have no effect.
Raise's chance to kill a non-Heavy undead enemy as follows:
If the target has shell, the Spell Hit% is halved. If the target is a toad, its Evade % is reduced to 0.
The game generates two random numbers between 0 and 99.
- If N1 >= Hit%, the spell misses
- If N2 < Evade%, the spell misses
Raise can be reflected, but since KO'd allies can't have reflect, this mainly matters when used as an instant death spell against undead enemies.
Use[]
White Mages can use Raise as an alternative to Phoenix Down. Though it has a fairly hefty MP cost, Phoenix Downs are limited in number, and the player may prefer to save some for characters who do not have access to White Magic.
When used against undead enemies, it has a similar effect to Death for non-undead enemies: though risky, it has a good chance to take out an enemy entirely. As such, Raise is an effective if somewhat unreliable way to battle undead enemies, with the main drawback being its hefty MP cost to keep using it for this purpose.
The spell Arise outclasses Raise, costing 50 MP to revive an ally at full HP. With an MP cost at under half of that of Arise, but less than using both Raise and Curaga to have the same effect, Arise is both more turn-efficient and more MP-efficient. It also has a 100% chance to kill undead enemies, making it more reliable. As such, the only reason to use Raise is when short on MP, or when lacking access to White Magic level 6. The Mixes Kiss of Life, Resurrection, and Reincarnate have the same effect as Arise.
