Etymology[]

Bolt refers to a lightning stroke.

Raikiri literally translates to "lightning cutter", and is based on the legendary katana Raikirimaru, the sword of Tachibana Dotetsu. Once known as Chidori, the sword gained a new name after Dotetsu was nearly struck by lightning while napping under a tree. Stories say that Dotetsu preempted the lightning strike upon hearing the close thunder, but saw that the bolt was the incarnation of the god of thunder, who tried to strike him down. Though the left half of Dotetsu's body was paralyzed for the rest of his life, his act of countering the god's attack by cutting through the lightning helped him survive, and led him to be known as "Oni Dotetsu", and his sword as Raikirimaru.
