Esper section (PS)
Ragnarok is a sword esper in Final Fantasy VI. It can be acquired as either a magicite or a weapon, depending on the player's choice.
Ragnarok is a recurring sword in the Final Fantasy series and usually one of the more powerful ones available, but Final Fantasy VI is the main instance of it appearing as a summon.
Profile
Unlike most espers, the Ragnarok does not appear as a living creature. Instead, it is a sword that appears metallic, and takes the shape of a claymore. It has golden guards and a dark gray and red grip.
Obtained
The Ragnarok can be obtained from a shop in Narshe in the World of Ruin when Locke in the party (he is recruited from the Phoenix Cave). Locke can open the door to the weapon shop in Narshe, where the owner at the back will offer to either transform the Ragnarok magicite into a weapon, or simply grant them the magicite.
Since Ragnarok is the only esper to teach Ultima, many players take the esper. However, if one has enough patience to remove the curse from the Cursed Shield, they receive the Paladin Shield, which can teach Ultima at the same rate. This allows players to take the sword instead of the esper, which they can then trade at the Dragon's Neck Coliseum for the Lightbringer, the most powerful weapon.
If playing the Advance or a later version, the player can take the esper and later steal the sword from Lady in the final battle, as the player can then continue playing after beating the game. If the player chose the sword over the magicite, the can still steal a second Ragnarok sword from Lady, and therefore obtain a second Lightbringer.
Battle
Esper
Ragnarok costs 6 MP to summon into battle. Its ability is Metamorphose (or Metamorph in the original translations), which transforms an enemy into one of four items. The four possible items, and the hit rate, depend on the enemy.
There are 27 possible morph patterns coded into the game that any enemy can use. IDs 0-31 are used to determine the morph pattern, though 26-31 are duplicates. Sets 12, 13, and 15 go unused.
Weapon
Sword that may cast Flare upon striking an enemy.
Description
Ragnarok as a weapon can be equipped by Terra, Locke, Edgar, and Celes. It has 255 Battle Power, and enables the Bushido and Runic commands. It consumes 20 MP each turn to perform an automatic critical hit, and can randomly cast Flare after an attack.
Ragnarok is affected by the capture glitch.
Magicite
If chosen as a magicite, Ragnarok teaches Ultima at a rate of x1 per AP. This is the most powerful spell in the game, as it has high damage, is unblockable, and hits all enemies. Unlike most magicite, Ragnarok doesn't offer stat boosts upon level up.

Etymology
Ragnarok is a recurring sword in the series. Ragnarök is a prophesied event triggered by the death of the god Balder. It sees a great battle between all the major entities of Norse mythology, during which the spirits in Valhalla are called upon to join the fray. The encounter ends with the destruction of the universe, and Balder along with a handful of others are reborn as mortals, with few memories of the world before Ragnarök.
