Ragnarok is a weapon for Cloud in Final Fantasy VII, obtained late in the game during the story. It is Cloud's second most powerful weapon below Ultima Weapon, being well-rounded and with high stats and six linked Materia slots. The player can equip it to Cloud or throw it, or sell it for 1 gil.

Obtained[]

Ragnarok is obtained by defeating Proud Clod, fought after returning to Midgar during "Mako Cannon Rampage".

Mechanics[]

As the Ragnarok has a base Attack stat bonus of 97, the base damage for physical attacks when the Ragnarok is equipped is the following formula:

where "Level" is Cloud's current level and "Strength" is his Strength stat. It also has an Attack% (Accuracy) of 105%, and grants a +43 bonus to Cloud's Magic stat when casting spells.

Use[]

Ragnarok FF7

Promotional render.

Ragnarok has strong stats and six linked Materia slots,, and is Cloud's strongest weapon below Ultima Weapon, and the strongest weapon without Ultima's HP mechanic. Ragnarok therefore outclasses every other weapon in terms of strength.

Because Ragnarok provides strong boosts to Magic and all its slots are linked, it can be used effectively if the player is building Cloud to cast spells. The player can link Cloud's Magic Materia and Summon Materia with many Support Materia for devastating effects, lean more heavily on Command Materia for physical damage, or use a mix of both. The number of slots mean Cloud has plenty of room for Independent Materia.

In contrast to Ultima Weapon, as Ragnarok lacks the HP mechanic, it is more consistent, but deals less damage overall, and has fewer Materia slots. However, the Materia linked to Ultima Weapon will not gain AP. Ultimately, it is worth equipping Ultima Weapon over Ragnarok most of the time.

Etymology[]

In Norse mythology, Ragnarök is a prophesied event triggered by the death of the god Balder. It sees a great battle between all the major entities of Norse mythology, during which the spirits in Valhalla are called upon to join the fray. The encounter ends with the destruction of the universe, and Balder along with a handful of others are reborn as mortals, with few memories of the world before Ragnarök.
