The Pyrolisk, also known as Perilisk in the Nintendo Entertainment System version, is an enemy in the original Final Fantasy. The Pyrolisk's physical attacks are slightly stronger than their cousin the Cockatrice's, although they do not cause Petrification. This does not mean Pyrolisks are unable to Petrify the unwary; rather, the Pyrolisk uses its Gaze skill to kill its enemies instantly, which the Gold Needle it drops will most-assuredly not cure.

In the NES and Wonderswan versions, its Gaze attack was considered fire-element and could be blocked by NulBlaze, as well as NulDeath. In the remakes, only NulDeath and gear with Death resistance will block it.

Pyrolisks, being creatures of Fire, are resistant to Fire-based magic but suffer a weakness from Ice-based magic. Even without Ice magic, however, they are not strong creatures and can be killed fairly easily with strong physical attacks.

They are found in Mount Gulg, and in the Mirage Tower, being very easy monsters in the Mirage Tower, because the party is more leveled up than in the volcano. However, they appear in groups, and may manage to kill one of the player's characters (if they do not run away).

In the Waterfall Cavern, on the south part of this cave, there is a huge room with many chests and a robot. A group of Pyrolisks, Cockatrices, and Mummies guard the room. They can be easily finished off, though.

Trivia

  • Like almost all enemies in Final Fantasy, the Pyrolisk is a reference to Dungeons and Dragons. The Pyrolisk is a rare subspecies of Cockatrice (Final Fantasy), which has the ability to super-heat a creature to spontaneous combustion (causing instant death) if it meets its gaze.
