A Tarutaru Puppetmaster and his Automaton, from Final Fantasy XI.

Puppetmasters are a recurring Job class in the Final Fantasy series. While only selectable as a Job in Final Fantasy XI, they appear as part of the story in the worlds of Final Fantasy IV and Final Fantasy VII. They use nonliving objects to attack in battle.

Appearances

Final Fantasy IV

Luca, the princess of the dwarven kingdom, has possession of several living dolls, collectively called the Calcabrina. They serve as a boss fight, and in Final Fantasy IV: The After Years, appear as playable characters alongside Luca herself.

In addition, the monster Marionetteer could be considered a sort of enemy Puppetmaster of sorts, as they appear with and summon doll-type monsters: Evil Doll and Marionette. Other than their dolls, they have no significant attacks or abilities.

Final Fantasy VII

Reeve Tuesti controls the robotic Cait Sith dolls this way, and considers them his children. Cait Sith in turn fights by controlling a second puppet, a giant Moogle.

In an early version of the script, Reeve is called an "Inspire," capable of breathing life into inanimate objects. However, this plot point was dropped before the game was released.

Final Fantasy X

Although not officially stated, Lulu uses animated stuffed dolls as her weapons, mainly as tools to help her cast Black Magic.

Final Fantasy XI

Puppetmasters use Automatons to aid them in battle, and they can customize them to fulfill a variety of roles and use a number of techniques. The Puppetmaster is also second only to the Monk in the art of hand-to-hand combat.

Final Fantasy XIV

While Puppetmaster is not yet a playable class, it was mentioned in a player's poll as an example of a pet job that may be added to the game later. The Mammets found throughout Ul'dah strongly resemble the Automatons in Final Fantasy XI, and as the Pugilist guild is also in Ul'dah it is possible Square-Enix intended to pair Hand-to-Hand fighters with robots at some point anyway.
