Punt is a physical ability for Lightning in Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII.
Obtained[]
The Martial Monk garb naturally has access to a locked Punt Lv. 2. It is obtained on Day 11 within the Ark.
Punt can be obtained as a drop from Skata'nes with a 15% chance and Skata'ne Ω with a 100% chance. The enemies drop the ability on the following days and difficulties:
Enemy | Lv. 1 | Lv. 2 | Lv. 3 | Lv. 4 | Lv. 5 |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Skata'ne | Day 1 - 6 (Easy/Normal) | Day 7 - 9 (Easy/Normal) | Day 10 - 13 (Easy/Normal) | Day 1 - 6 (Hard) | Day 7 - 13 (Hard) |
Skata'ne Ω | N/A | Day 1 - 6 (Easy/Normal) | Day 7 - 9 (Easy/Normal) | Day 10 - 13 (Easy/Normal) | Day 1 - 13 (Hard) |
Mechanics[]
Punt has Lightning performing a kick attack that deals weak physical non-elemental damage to a single target, functioning as a lesser version of the normal Attack ability. Similar to Light Slash, Punt has a low ATB usage when Lightning peforms the attack, but unlike the former, Punt inflicts a small knockback on enemies and can chain into a combo finisher. Punt can be enhanced with En-spell effects.
By default, Punt has an ATB cost of 3, an attack power of 0.15, a Stagger Power of E, and a Stagger Time of C. When fully upgraded, Punt Lv.5 can have an ATB cost of 5, an attack power of 1.00, a Stagger Power of E, and a Stagger Time of C.

Lightning using Whirlwind Kick.

Use[]

Behind the scenes[]
The Martial Monk having access to Punt as a locked ability is a reference to the Monk job's recurring Kick command, with Punt's Japanese name being Kick (キック, Kikku?).
In addition, the Martial Monk's Punt upgrade, Whirlwind Kick, is a reference to the Monk's Tornado Kick ability from Final Fantasy XI. Both abilities share similar Japanese names - Final Fantasy XI's version being (闘魂旋風脚, Tōkon Senpūkyaku?, lit. Fighting Spirit Tornado Kick), while the Lightning Returns attack is (旋風脚, Senpūkyaku?, lit. Tornado Kick). Both attacks serve as a reference to the Senpukyaku attack used by Ryu from the Street Fighter game series.
Etymology[]
A punt is a play in rugby and gridiron football in which the team in possession of the ball must kick it back to the opponent. In both American and Canadian football, a punt is typically called as the final play in a series when the previous plays have failed to advance the ball past the current line to gain within the allotted number of downs.
