Pulse gives the new l'Cie their powers.

Pulse, known as Hallowed Pulse in the Analects and also sometimes referred to as Maker, is a deity in Fabula Nova Crystallis: Final Fantasy mythology. It is the god that is said to have created the world where Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy XIII-2 take place, and it used to be worshiped by many of the tribes inhabiting the world, who named the planet after it, calling it Gran Pulse. The people living on Cocoon refer to the world of Gran Pulse, simply as Pulse.

It was the Great and Hallowed Pulse who, seeking to expand divine domain, parted the chaos and fashioned realm within; made fal'Cie, and charged them with this world's completion.
The fal'Cie, anxious to please the hand that shaped them, labored devotedly at the task they had been given. They made l'Cie of men so that they, too, might be able to aid the greater cause. Men, in turn, offered praise and prayer to Hallowed Pulse, naming their great land in honor of its architect.
Yet still the architect departed.

Mythos6

The mythological Pulse.

According to the official Fabula Nova Crystallis mythology Pulse was the first deity created by Bhunivelze, and Pulse is called a "fal'Cie" in the myths. Bhunivelze's goal was to find the door to the Unseen Realm and he created Pulse to find the means to do that. Pulse is said to have created the world and bore many fal'Cie of its own, many of who were tasked to search for the door. One day, however, Pulse left the world, never to be seen again, and by the time of Final Fantasy XIII Pulse is only known in the myths and legends of the people. The fal'Cie of Cocoon, who are of Lindzei's breed, wish to bring the departed gods back to the world to have the world reborn anew, and, believing that the gods have departed to the Unseen Realm, come up with a plan to open the door by the means of mass sacrifice of people.

Pulse Face FFXIII

Pulse as seen in Final Fantasy XIII.

Final Fantasy XIII Ultimania Omega reveals that Pulse is actually seen in Final Fantasy XIII, although not ever referred to by name. When the fal'Cie Anima brands the party as l'Cie an ominous sound of church bells chiming is heard and the party enters a dark realm where a figure with a man's face with one side of his face covered enters from a crystal structure and proceeds to give the party their brands of the l'Cie. This figure is identified as Pulse in the Final Fantasy XIII Ultimania Omega guide book.[1] This figure was thought to be Anima by many, as it is Anima who chooses the humans who are turned to l'Cie. However, it would appear that while the fal'Cie choose the person to be branded, the power actually comes from the god Pulse and the dark realm where the party enter during this scene is, in fact, in another dimension, the domain of the gods. This area slightly resembles a dark version of Historia Crux.

Trivia

  • The sound of church bells that is heard when the party enters the dark realm where they meet Pulse, is also heard in Final Fantasy XIII-2 whenever the world is engulfed by chaos; this is seen during the scenes where Lightning is taken to Valhalla, and in the end of the game.
  • Pulse is also mentioned in Final Fantasy Type-0. The armistice in the era of the game was proclaimed by the three major nations of Oriense "in the name of the God Pulse," as noted by Celestia quoting from the Fabula Conventions.
