Stats[]

Level AP required Effect
1 0 Effect: 60s; Cooldown: 90s
2 100 Effect: 90s; Cooldown: 60s
3 200 Effect: 120s; Cooldown: 30s

Use[]

Provoke materia draws enemies away from injured party members towards the holder of the materia, when not controlled by the player. The ability has a long duration, which increases as it levels up. Provoke allows an injured party member time to be healed and to recover, or for them to attack the now distracted enemies.

The party member with Provoke equipped should be durable enough to withstand enemy attacks. Equipping them with good armor and accessory is crucial, and defensive materia such as HP Up Materia HP Up Materia, Vitality Up Materia Vitality Up Materia, Spirit Up Materia Spirit Up Materia, and Elemental Materia Elemental Materia can be beneficial.

Barret is normally the best candidate for the materia due to his durability from having the highest HP and strong defensive attributes. Red XIII is a close favorite not only due to his durability, but his ability to counterattack; with Auto-Weapon Ability Materia Auto-Weapon Ability Materia, he may also use Sentinel Stance independently. Cloud similarly has strong enough durability to make use of the materia and counterattacks automatically when using Auto-Unique Ability Materia Auto-Unique Ability Materia. Cait Sith has lower defensive attributes but very high HP.

However, enemies' attention can already be somewhat directed even without Provoke because they tend to focus on the player-controlled character. Many powerful enemies, such as bosses, also tend to ignore it.
