Rikku performing Provoke in Final Fantasy X HD Remaster.

Hey you! Take me on!

Provoke (挑発, Chōhatsu?), also known as Taunt, Lure, Decoy, or Draw Attacks, is an ability that entices enemies to attack. This is often used to protect weaker party members, or to keep monsters from using special attacks/magic.

Appearances[]

Final Fantasy III[]

Provoke in Final Fantasy III (3D).

Provoke is the Viking class's command ability, which forces the enemy party to attack the user and lowers the enemy's Defense equal to the following formula:

Enemy Defense = Original Defense x (100 - (0.5 x JobLv))%

The success rate of Provoke is as follows:

  • Job Level 1-20 = 60%
  • Job Level 21-40 = 70%
  • Job Level 41-80 = 80%
  • Job Level 81-98 = 90%
  • Job Level 99-100 = 100%

Final Fantasy IV: The After Years[]

Golbez using Taunt.

Draw the enemy's attack to the user.

Description

Golbez's Taunt makes all enemy attacks target him. It has a Charge Time of 0.

Final Fantasy V[]

Lure's description indicates that it causes enemies to attack the character with Lure—however, this is actually incorrect, and the ability's real effect is to increase the frequency of random encounters. Lure is the first ability learned from the Gladiator job class, only available in the Advance remake.

Final Fantasy VII Remake[]

Provoke is a passive ability that activates on a non-controlled party member when the player character falls into low health, drawing the enemies toward themselves, giving the player some breathing room and time to heal. It does not work on bosses.

Final Fantasy X[]

Provoke is a Special ability found in Tidus's section of the Sphere Grid. It costs 4 MP to use and inflicts the Provoke status onto an enemy. Successfully provoking an enemy will also counteract the Berserk status.

Final Fantasy XI[]

Provoke is available to Warriors (level 5). When used, it will create an instant high amount of enmity towards the user. It is viewed as an almost essential ability to have in order to serve as a tank. Its recast time is 30 seconds and its duration is instant.

In PvP battles, this ability adds Provoked status instead of enmity. In Besieged, provoking a charmed person puts them to sleep. A Puppetmaster's Automaton can use this ability by having a Strobe equipped and a Fire Maneuver in place.

Final Fantasy XII[]

Provoke is an enemy ability that inflicts Berserk on the target. It can be used by Seeq Cateran and Bangaa Pirate.

Final Fantasy XIII[]

Entice enemies in range to attack you.

Description

Provoke in Final Fantasy XIII.

Provoke is a command ability of the Sentinel role that, if successful, draws the attention of enemies to the user. It has an ATB cost of 1 and is learned by Lightning (stage 7), Sazh (stage 7), Snow (stage 1), Vanille (stage 7), Hope (stage 7), and Fang (stage 5). It has a base duration of 50 seconds and success rate of 45%.

Challenge is a similar ability that forces a single enemy to attack the user. It can be learned by Sazh (stage 7), Snow (stage 6), and Fang (stage 7). It has a base duration of 150 seconds and success rate of 99%.

Final Fantasy XIII-2[]

Provoke icon.

Provoke and Challenge function similarly to before. Additionally, the player can see if the enemy is immune to Provoke by checking the top-right corner of the enemy information screen. It has replaced the Death status in the screen from Final Fantasy XIII.

It can be learned by Serah (role level 1), Noel (role level 1), and all tameable Sentinel monsters at level 1 (except Navidon). Only monsters can learn Challenge.

Final Fantasy XIV[]

Gesture threateningly, placing yourself at the top of a target's enmity list.

Description
Provoke icon.

Provoke is a Role Action common to all tanks learned at level 16 that gives the user enmity equivalent to that of the player with the current highest enmity on its target's threat list, plus one. For maximum effectiveness, it is best to pair Provoke while tank stance is on to firmly establish a hate threshold higher than that of the previous target. Thus, while not being useful for generating enmity when one is already the monster's target, it is a vital tool, along with Shirk, for "tank swap" mechanics on difficult bosses. Before the release of Stormblood, it was a Gladiator ability learned at level 22, with the same function and can be used by other classes.

Final Fantasy Tactics Advance[]
