FFXII Protectga

Protectga in Final Fantasy XII.

Protectga (プロテガ, Purotega?) is a recurring spell in the Final Fantasy series. The spell serves as upgraded form of Protect, granting increased physical defense for multiple party members.

Overview[]

Protectga serves as final version of the Protect spell, granting increased physical defense for all party members in combat. Titles with magic types often categorize Protectga as a White Magic spell, but there have been several entries that include it as a Green Magic spell. Its magic defense parallel is the recurring Shellga spell.

The spell's name derives from the magic tier system, using the -ga (, ga?) suffix. The Japanese name, Protega (プロテガ, Purotega?), originates from Final Fantasy IX, with the Protection Bell key item originally being known as the Protega Bell (プロテガベル, Purotega Beru?) in Japanese. The spell made its first formal appearance in Final Fantasy XII, being a late tier Green Magick spell. Unlike its later incarnations, the original version required players to be within range of the spellcaster to be affected.

Due to the series opting to use the -ga suffix for second tier magics, Protectga has often replaced its predecessors, Protectra and Protectja.

Appearances[]

In the Zodiac versions, Protectga is listed as White Magick, its license being White Magick 12 that costs 110 LP. The spell can be found in a chest in the Necrohol of Nabudis (Cloister of Distant Song). It can be used by the White Mage, Monk, and Shikari, although Monk must acquire the Esper Chaos and Shikari the Esper Cúchulainn.

Non-Final Fantasy guest appearances[]

Other Square Enix titles[]

Protectga has appeared outside of the Final Fantasy series in some form in other Square Enix titles.

The Kingdom Hearts series features Protega as an ability tied to the Ultimate Mushroom shield for Goofy in Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix, causing damage inflicted on the wielder to be reduced by 40%. In addition, the spell's name is used for the Protega Chain accessory from the first Kingdom Hearts.

The Japanese-exclusive 3D remake of SaGa 3 (known as the Final Fantasy Legend III in the west) also features Protectga as an enhancing magic, serving as an upgraded form of the Protect spell. The ability grants increased defense for the entire party.
