Protect (プロテス, Purotesu), also known as Barrier and Safe, is a recurring positive status effect in the series. It is often granted to a character through the use of the Protect spell, the Auto-ability Auto-Protect, the item Light Curtain, or the Blue Magic spell Mighty Guard. It typically reduces all damage done from physical attacks for a set amount of time.

Appearances

Final Fantasy

Protect is a positive status effect that the player can use from their White Mage, White Wizard, Red Mage, Red Wizard, or Knight. It raises the defense of the target slightly. It will not wear off after a set of time and can be stacked on each other like the Temper spell. It will only wear off if the character with Protect on them either dies or has Dispel used on them. After the spell is used the said target of the spell will have a glowing orange outline around them.

Final Fantasy IV

Protect is only achieved through the Protect spell. There is no visible indication of the spell in effect, and here, it does not halve damage of physical attacks, and instead raises a character's Defense. It can be stacked until a character's Defense hits 255%. However, this was changed in the DS version. as the status now existed as Protect, and lost its stacking effect.
