Armour of light, halt physical might.

FFXII Protect

Protect in Final Fantasy XII.

Protect (プロテス, Purotesu?), also known as Fog, Armor, Shield, or Safe, is a recurring spell in the Final Fantasy series. It appears in various games in the series, and it generally halves all physical damage dealt to the target.

Overview[]

FFD Protect

Protect in Final Fantasy Dimensions.

Protect serves as one of the primary recurring buff spells in the series, appearing since original Final Fantasy. Protect initially served a role in defending against both physical and magic attacks, but starting from Final Fantasy IV it exclusively took a role in raising a target's physical defense, serving as physical parallel to Shel. Titles with magic types often categorize Protect as a White Magic spell, but there have been several entries that include it as a Green Magic spell.

Protect is absent in Final Fantasy VII and its related titles, being substituted with the Barrier spell instead. In addition, a debuffing version known as Deprotect also appears, which lowers a target's physical defense.

Newer entries would begin to regularly feature group-wide variants, with Protect often being relegated to single targets. Upgraded versions have names deriving from the series recurring Magic tier system. The following are some of the recurring upgraded tiers:

  • Protectra (プロテア, Purotea?, lit. Protea) - A recurring group variant of Protect, originally appearing in the first Final Fantasy. It raises the defense of multiple allies, with its buffing amount varying depending on the title.
  • Protectga (プロテガ, Purotega?, lit. Protega) - Serves as a recurring group variant of Protect, originally appearing in Final Fantasy XII as a Green Magick spell. It grants Protect to all allies within an area of effect, with some titles having the spell's effects have a shorter duration than its single target counterpart. Due to the series beginning to prefer to use -ga for two tier magics, Protectga has often replaced its predecessor in newer titles

In addition, several titles have featured unique or alternate upgraded forms for Protect. These spells include unique properties, or are used by specific jobs:

  • Protectra (プロテダ, Puroteda?, lit. Proteda) - An upgraded version of Protectra that exclusively appears in Final Fantasy XIII. Unlike the recurring group variant of the same name, the Protectra of Final Fantasy XIII is a single target buffing spell that raises the physical resistances of a target by 50%, but at the cost of a shorter duration. Despite sharing the same name in English, the spell is known as Proteda in Japanese.
  • Protera (プロテラ, Purotera?, lit. Protera) - An upgraded version that appears in Final Fantasy Type-0 and its related titles. It activates after charging the base Protect spell after a short period, raising the defenses of the user and an additional party member when used.
  • Protectja (プロテジャ, Puroteja?, lit. Proteja) - An upgraded version of Protect that exclusively appears in Final Fantasy Tactics as a White Magick. It has a similar area of effect range to its predecessor, but has a greater height range.
  • Protect I - XVI (プロテスLv.1 - プロテスLv.16, Purotesu Lv.1 - Purotesu Lv.16?) - Due to the unique progression system of Final Fantasy II, Protect levels up like all other magics. There are sixteen versions, having increased resistance amounts and success rates with each level.
  • Protect II - Protect V (プロテスII - プロテスV, Purotesu II - Purotesu V?)- Upgraded forms of Protect that exclusively appear in Final Fantasy XI. Due to the -ra and -ga tiers in the title being used exclusively for area-of-effect versions, Protect magics serve as the single target versions used by most jobs with access to White Magic, with its upgraded versions using Roman numerals to signify their enhanced rank.

White Mage - FOG

Raises one ally's defense.

Description

Protect (FOG on the NES and Shld1 in Final Fantasy Origins) is a level 1 White Magic spell which increases the Defense of a single ally by 8 points. The spell can be bought at Cornelia and can be learned by the White Mage, White Wizard, Red Mage, Red Wizard, and Knight job classes. Protect (Shield in Origins) is a White Magic spell which increases the Defense of one or all allies reducing physical damage inflicted by enemies. As the spell's level grows, the spell's effectiveness and success rate increase. The effect can stack, however repeated use on the same unit(s) increases the chance that the spell will miss.

Any character can learn Protect by having them use the Protect Tome (Shield Scroll in Origins). The spell was bugged in the NES version, only working on the caster. It increases the target's Defense equal to 1/4 of the caster's Spirit stat per level.

Effect Allows the target to learn Protect when used outside of battle. Casts Protect VIII on all allies when used in battle.
Buy Paloom, Poft, Mysidia, Machanon
Cost 400 gil (Origins)

Protect in Final Fantasy III (Pixel Remaster).

Protect is a level 5 White Magic spell. When used, the spell increases the Physical and Magic Defense of a single target in some fashion in all versions.

It can be used by the White Mage, Devout, and Sage jobs in all versions. The Red Mage gains access to this spell in both the Pixel Remaster and 3D remakes, while the Onion Knight job can also use it in the 3D remake. Additionally, Aria can cast Protect on the whole party when she joins as a guest in the 3D version.

Final Fantasy IV[]

Reduces physical damage received.

Description

Protect (Armor on the North American SNES and PlayStation) is a White Magic spell. The spell is not learnable in the SNES North American and Easy Type versions. This spell is still used by Zemus's Malice, but the white magic icon has been removed from its name.

In the 2D versions, Protect has a casting time of 0, costs 9 MP with 66% Accuracy. It boosts its target(s) Defense stat by 5 points, up to a maximum of 255, for the duration of the battle. The spell can be manually targeted to either a single target or the entire party without any impact on its effectiveness. Protect can fail frequently when cast by a character with a low Spirit stat and will always fail if its target's Defense is at 255. Dispel does not remove the effect of the spell's Defense increase.

In the 3D versions, the spell sets Protect status on its targets, and can only be applied once. Its MP cost has been boosted to 15.

It is also an enemy ability used by Asura (2D and 3D) and Platinum Toad.

Protect is learned by Rosa (level 12), Porom (level 12), Tellah (after completing Mt. Ordeals), Fusoya (default) and Paladin Cecil (3D; level 10).

Protect is hardcoded to have no effect during the final battle against Zeromus. The spell's animation is displayed, but the Defense stat is not modified. This is of little consequence, since Zeromus does not attack physically.

Final Fantasy XIV[]

FFXIV ARR Protect

The White Mage's Protect in Final Fantasy XIV.

Prior to the release of the Shadowbringers expansion, Protect was a Healer cross-role spell learned at level 16. The spell raised the physical and magic defense of all allies within radius of the target for a period of 30 minutes. The spell could only be used by Conjurers, White Mages, Scholars, and Astrologians.

Protect has gone through various changes through each of the major expansions. From A Realm Reborn through Heavensward, Protect was initially a Conjurer and White Mage spell available at level 8. However for the entirety of A Realm Reborn, Protect only raised the physical defense of the party and only once Conjurers and White Mages learned the Proshell trait at level 16, Protect would also increase the magic defense of the party. However, in Heavensward, Protect's effect was changed, now raising both the physical and magic defense of the targets, allowing all classes to have access to the Proshell effect. In addition, the Proshell trait and status were removed. The ability could be used by all classes for cross class, but only the Scholar, Astrologian, and Paladin jobs could use the spell as a cross class skill. After the release of Stormblood, Protect was removed from the Conjurer skillset and became a Healer cross-role spell instead.

Protect was reintroduced as an action in Eureka, called Protect L, it also appears in the Bozjan Southern Front as Lost Protect.

Protect icon.

Protect appeared as an ability in the original 1.0 version. At the initial release, Protect was a Conjurer spell available for use at rank 16. The spell cost 3 action points to set and 9 MP to use. When used, Protect would enhance the physical defense of allies within an area of effect for 30 minutes.

After the release of patch 1.20, Protect remained a Conjurer spell available for use at level 6. Like before, the spell increased the physical defense of all party members within range of the target. In addition, once the player learned the Enhanced Protect trait at level 24, Protect would also increase magic defense akin to the Shell spell.

Final Fantasy XV []

Regis casts Protect when on the last of his health in Episode Ardyn. It erects a magical barrier to cover him and can attack while it's guarding him. The Protect spell has its own health gauge, which the player must deplete to get to Regis. Destroying the Protect puts Regis to Vulnerable state. After his Protect is destroyed, Regis puts up his last stand and grows even stronger.

Protect is also a curative spell in the Final Fantasy XV: Comrades online mode. It replaces standard curative magic when equipped with a weapon possessing an ability "Curative Magic: Protect". In addition to healing the character, like other curative magic, Protect also grants Stalwart status, which boosts the Glaive's Vitality.

Protect is incompatible with any Sigil that alters the Glaive's curative magic, with the Sigil taking precedence.

Other Square Enix titles[]

Chrono Trigger Protect

Protect in Chrono Trigger.

Protect has appeared outside of the Final Fantasy series as a magic ability in several other Square Enix titles.

The spell's first appearance outside of the series would be in SaGa 3 (known as the Final Fantasy Legend III in the west) as Shell (プロテス, Purotesu?), serving as a defensive White Magic spell. The Japanese-exclusive 3D remake of the title includes Protect once again as an enhancing magic, with its upgrade being Protega (プロテガ, Purotega?).

Protect also appears in Chrono Trigger as a single tech of Lucca, which grants a boost for an ally's defense in battle. It also appears in the Chrono series's spiritual successor, I Am Setsuna, as spritnite abilities for Aeterna.

BD Protect

Protect in Bravely Default.

The Kingdom Hearts series features Protect as a recurring auto-ability, appearing in Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories, Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix, Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep, and Re:coded. Protect simply lowers the amount of physical damage to user takes. In addition, Protect also appears as a Dream Eater command in Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance, granting an ally enhanced defense for a short period of time.

Additionally, Protect is a recurring White Magic spell in the Bravely series, being the common means of temporarily increasing physical defense in combat. The spell is naturally usable by White Mages in all titles, but titles associated with the first Bravely Default have allowed the Red Mage and Spiritmaster jobs to have natural access to the spell.
