Description
Protect, also known as Protes, is a White Magic spell in Final Fantasy V. It grants the protect effect to a target, halving all physical damage received. Protect is usable by the White and Red Magic skillsets (and can be used twice with Dualcast). Protect is also one of the spells that can be cast for free from the Wonder Wand.
Protect is also an enemy ability that can be used by Byblos, Calofisteri, Carbuncle, Enuo, Gilgamesh at the Big Bridge, Necromancer, Siren, Zephyrus, and Apanda.
Obtained[]
Protect can be purchased for 280 gil at Carwen, Karnak, or Jachol. Carwen is the earliest place Protect can be obtained. Once it is purchased, it can be used by any of the skillsets with the spell.
Another way to cast Protect is to use Defender as an item during battle, though this no longer works in the defunct mobile and Steam versions.
Use[]
Protect is a potent and inexpensive spell that will halve physical damage received. Against enemies that mostly use normal attacks or physical damage-based abilities, Protect is useful to cast, especially on characters who have low Defense (namely those without the ability to equip heavy armor) or are otherwise very vulnerable to attacks. The main downside is that it can only be used on one target, meaning the entire party cannot be granted the effect at once by the spell.
The spell Shell grants the shell effect, which does the same for magic damage (but cannot be used by Red Magic). Shell should be used when enemies rely more on magic damage than physical attacks.
Other spells exist to reduce physical damage, including the White Magic spell Blink, which causes two physical attacks to be avoided entirely. Another way to protect the entire party from physical damage is Golem, who can absorb a significant amount of physical damage once summoned. When the Blue Magic spell Mighty Guard is acquired, it can grant the protective effect to the entire party along with shell, making it much more turn-efficient despite its prohibitive MP cost. The Mixes Protect Potion and Dragon Defense also bestow numerous buffs to one target, protect included.
