Protect is a White Magic spell in Final Fantasy III. It grants the protect effect to a target, raising their Physical and Magic Defense. Protect is usable by the White Magic skillsets by default.

The enemies Yormungand and Shadow Master can use the spell as well.

Obtained[]

The spell can be bought in Northeast Saronia and Doga's Village for 5,000 gil.

The weapon Defender also casts Protect, as does the item Turtle Shell.

It can be used by the White Mage, Devout, and Sage jobs in all versions. The Red Mage gains access to this spell in both the Pixel Remaster and 3D remakes, while the Onion Knight job can also use it in the 3D remake. Additionally, Aria can cast Protect on the whole party when she joins as a guest in the 3D version.

Mechanics[]

Famicom[]

In the original Famicom version, Protect is a stackable spell that increases the target's Physical and Magic Defenses by 1 point. If the target's defense stats are at the 255 cap, it will be ineffective. The spell is bugged and will have its effects negated at the end of a turn if the target is using the Defend command. In addition, if a character under Protect enters the item menu, Protect is also negated.

It has an initial 80% chance of granting its effect, with its probability rate increasing based on the caster's job level. The following are the Protect probability rates from the Famicom release:[1]

Job level Probability
1 - 19 80 - 87.5%
20 - 39 86.5% - 95%
40 - 59 93% - 100%
60 - 79 99.5% - 100%
80 - 98 100%
99 100%

Pixel Remaster and 3D remakes[]

Protect has been changed to function entirely different in the 3D and Pixel Remaster remakes, increasing the target's physical and magic defenses by 1.2x for 10 turns with a 100% chance. The amount of turns in effect can be increased based on the caster's job level, with 18 turns being the highest amount.
