Uses powerful Shrapnel and Drill attacks.

Final Fantasy VI PlayStation Bestiary entry

The Prometheus, otherwise known as Prmethus, is an enemy in Final Fantasy VI that appears both in the final dungeon, in the room with the capsules and the one where Inferno lies, and in the Soul Shrine in the game versions that include this bonus dungeon.

Stats[]

Battle[]

Every turn, Prometheus has a 33% chance to use Metal Cutter or its special attack, Drill. Prometheus counters normal attacks with Southern Cross, and magic with Northern Cross. Though Northern Cross may freeze party members, as Southern Cross is a Fire Fire-elemental attack, it will thaw them should the Prometheus use it.

Strategy[]

As a machine-type enemy, Thundaga and other Lightning-elemental attacks work well against it. The player can also use Ultima to defeat the enemy.

Coliseum setup[]

Players should equip the Paladin's Shield/Flame Shield to nullify Southern Cross, along with the best available helmet and armor to limit physical damage. Northern Cross will do nothing more than delay the player's turns, since the frozen status will be removed by Southern Cross, or else wear off with time.

Etymology[]

Prometheus (Προμηθεύς, Promētheús, lit. "forethought") was a Titan in Greek mythology best known for stealing the gift of fire from the gods and bestowing it upon humans. As punishment, Zeus had him chained to a boulder and had an eagle eat his liver every day, which would grow back the next day to be eaten again. To punish man, Zeus later sent Pandora to live among them, an event that ultimately unleashed the evils of Pandora's box on mankind. Eventually, Prometheus would be freed by Hercules.
