Raises the strength of Throw.

Description

Power Throw is a support ability in Final Fantasy IX for Amarant that strengthens his Throw. Power Throw costs 19 Magic Stones to activate, the most of any support ability.

Obtained[]

Power Throw is learned from Bracer for 125 AP, synthesized in Black Mage Village in the endgame.

Mechanics[]

Throw deals physical non-elemental damage to one enemy. With Power Throw in effect, the damage is calculated as follows:

Base = Thrown Weapon's Attack * 2 - Enemy's Defense
Bonus = Strength + Rnd MOD ( [ ( Level + Strength ) / 8 ] + 1 )
Damage = Base * (Bonus * 1.5)

Bonus is still reduced to 1 if Amarant is in Mini status, and is halved on a target with the Protect status. The Bonus will still be 50% greater if the target is an aerial enemy, stacking with Power Throw. If Amarant equips Healer, damage is converted to healing.

Use[]

Power Throw improves Amarant's Throw, but is obtained very late: the only thing left to do in the story by the time it can be learned, is to go to the final dungeon, and though there are optional superbosses in the game, there are no bonus dungeons or extensive endgame bonus content that would require a lot of tough battling, mainly Chocobo Hot and Cold and Mognet Central and Tetra Master and Ragtime Mouse quiz.

Bracer, which teaches Power Throw to Amarant, also augments his Wind attacks, meaning that he will do impressive damage with Attack with his Kaiser Knuckles, and aerial enemies, who are more susceptible to Throw, are also commonly weak to Wind. This means that instead of equipping Power Throw when he equips Bracer, he should just use Kaiser Knuckles and normal Attack and save the Magic Stones for Killer abilities and possibly MP Attack and Counter. The one upside of using Throw instead of Attack would be to placed in the back row, but even Long Reach is cheaper to equip than Power Throw.

Power Throw could be useful if Amarant is brought along to fight Ozma or the final bosses, as they are all aerial enemies and thus susceptible to Throw. Throw with Power Throw active surpasses Amarant's No Mercy (even with the Wind-elemental Kaiser Knuckles) with Wing Edge, his most powerful throwing weapon; though Wing Edges are not sold in normal shops, by the end of the game the player will likely have accumulated a sizable stack of them. However, Attack + Kaiser Knuckles + Bracer + Bird Killer + MP Attack will still outdamage the Throw + Power Throw + Wind Edge setup. The boon of the latter is that the player will not need to keep topping up Amarant's MP for MP Attack to take effect, and that there is little need to conserve any of the Wing Edges at the end of the game, even if procuring more of them would be time consuming. If the player has excess gil, however, they can do even better than Wing Edges and buy Ultima Swords from Daguerreo and throw them instead; this will likely be the best damage Amarant can do if he has Power Throw equipped.
