Poison is a status in Final Fantasy. It is primarily associated with the Poison element. Poison is exclusive to enemies, as no player characters have the means of inflicting the status.

Content in italics is exclusive to the Dawn of Souls and/or 20th Anniversary releases.

Mechanics[]

Poison causes the target to take damage at the end each round when in combat, and with every step taken out of combat. The damage taken in combat depends on the release: in the NES release it deals 2 damage per round, the WSC through 20th Anniversary releases deal 1/20 (5%) max HP per round, and the Pixel Remaster deals 1/16 (6.25%) max HP per round. The damage dealt out of combat is the same in all releases, dealing 1 damage per step. Poison damage can only KO the victim during combat; out of combat it will not reduce the victim below 1 HP.

As with other statuses, it is only possible to be immune to the Poison condition in the Pixel Remaster release, though enemies are immune to it in the NES release due to a bug; in other releases, the most one can do is resist the element of an attack that inflicts the status, reducing its accuracy. Even if a target is listed as resisting Poison, this is in reference to the element, rather than effects that can inflict Poison.
