Poison is a status in Final Fantasy VII that periodically inflicts Poison-elemental fractional physical damage upon the afflicted unit and does not remain after battle. The afflicted unit's battle model turns green.
Mechanics[]
Afflicted takes 1/32 of Max HP of physical Poison-elemental damage every 2.5 units of time ignoring Defense stat and Barrier statuses. The status last till the end of battle or until cured. The damage from the Poison status functions as if it is the player damaging themselves. Therefore, when in both the Poison status and the All Lucky 7s status, the Poison will deal 7777 damage. As the requirement of being in the All Lucky 7s status is to have 7777 health, the player will die unless they protect against Poison element. If the poisoned character is trying to Defend, the defensive stance is canceled out whenever the character takes damage.
Because the Poison status deals Poison-elemental damage, the player can be healed by it if they make the character absorb Poison, such as with the Poison Materia linked with a mastered Elemental Materia in armor. If the character is immune to the Poison element (take no damage from it), they are also immune to the Poison status.
In many games in the series Poison status is mutually exclusive with Regen, but this is not the case in Final Fantasy VII; a single unit can have both at the same time.

Battle Square handicap[]

Poison is a handicap in the Battle Square the player may land on in-between rounds. It is one of the more benign handicaps that may be worth aiming for deliberately, especially if the player has status-protection. However, Resist does not protect the player from handicap reels, only makes the afflictions impossible to remove.

The following methods allow the player to protect against Poison:
| Accessory | Fairy Ring, Poison Ring, Ribbon, Star Pendant |
|---|---|
| Materia | Added Effect/LV2 Elemental + Poison/Hades in a linked slot in an armor |

The following enemies are immune to Poison. Machine enemies are immune. Bosses are typically immune, the exceptions being Aps, Bad Rap Sample, Bottomswell, Dark Nation, Demons Gate, Dyne, Gi Nattak, Godo, Gorkii, Lost Number, Materia Keeper, Midgar Zolom, Palmer, Poodler Sample, Pyramid, Red Dragon, Ruby's Tentacle, Rufus, Sample:H0512, Sample:H0512-opt, Shake, Staniv, Turks:Elena, Turks:Reno, and Turks:Rude.
Use[]
Poison can be useful for adding additional damage over time, and the player can gain access to it as early as Shinra Bldg. through both the Poison Materia and the item Deadly Waste. While most regular fights end relatively quickly without the need of Poison, it may be useful in a few boss fights. In particular, it is useful against Midgar Zolom, Lost Number, and Bottomswell as damage from Poison does not trigger them to change form. It an also be utilized against Dyne, Demons Gate, Red Dragon, Materia Keeper, and the final battle with the Turks to great effect.
