Consume all ATB charges to deliver a close-range attack and send enemies flying.Description
Point Blank is an ability for Barret in Final Fantasy VII Remake, provided to him by the EKG Cannon. Barret strikes his opponent with his gun-arm, dealing instant damage, as well as heavy delayed damage a few seconds later. The ability was improved in Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade.
Point Blank is an ability for Barret, which deals both physical melee and ranged damage. Barret will step forward to jab his target with his gun-arm and then fire, hitting all enemies within small radius in front of him, and attaching a timed bomb to them. The bomb will explode after 5 seconds, hitting all enemies within its radius.

Stagger formula (second hit only):
Where Target's Physical Ranged Rate Modifier is the respective stagger rate modifier of the target
The second hit from the initial attack has a stagger rate of 1. Each hit from Point Blank has an interrupt strength of 50. This ability consumes all of Barret's current ATB gauges, up to three with Refocus. The more ATB charges consumed, the more damage will be dealt.
- 1 ATB charge
The initial hit will have an attack power of 5, while the second hit has an attack power of 115. In the PlayStation 4 version, the bomb has an attack power of 300, for a total attack power of 420. In Intergrade, the explosion will have an attack power of 400, for a total attack power of 520. Barret will have an interrupt defense of 40 while using Point Blank after spending one ATB charge.
- 2 ATB charges
The initial hit will have an attack power of 5, while the second hit has an attack power of 235. In the PlayStation 4 version, the bomb has an attack power of 700, for a total attack power of 940. In Intergrade, the explosion will have an attack power of 900, for a total attack power of 1,140. Barret will have an interrupt defense of 60 while using Point Blank after spending two ATB charges, making him very hard to interrupt.
- 3 ATB charges
The initial hit will have an attack power of 60, while the second hit has an attack power of 455. In the PlayStation 4 version, the bomb has an attack power of 1,000, for a total attack power of 1,515. In Intergrade, the explosion will have an attack power of 1,300, for a total attack power of 1,815. Barret will have an interrupt defense of 60 while using Point Blank after spending three ATB charges, making him very hard to interrupt.
Among all of Barret's abilities, Point Blank has the largest potential for damage, and is the second-most powerful ability in the game when expending 2 ATB, bested only by using Infinity's End against staggered targets. When using Refocus Materia, Point Blank is the most powerful character ability when spending 3 ATB bars. In Intergrade, it can outdamage level 1 limit breaks after using Refocus.
Point Blank causes Barret to lunge forward and jab his target, before shooting them point blank. This interrupts some enemies and will attach a sticky mine to them. Barret will be free to attack as normal while the mine ticks. The mine will detonate after 5 seconds, dealing heavy damage in an explosion that can affect multiple enemies clustered near its primary target. If this happens, a mine will attach to all enemies hit, resulting in multiple area-of-effect damage explosions. Casting Stop on Barret's target will prevent the explosion from triggering until the effect wears off.
Point Blank requires Barret to be as close as possible to his target, otherwise he might miss. Many fast and flying enemies can move out of the way before Point Blank hits, unless they are pressured or staggered. If the ability is issued as a command to Barret when not in player control, he will close the gap by running before using the attack, making it significantly safer to use.
Point Blank is the antithesis to Maximum Fury; it must be used in close range, and deals heavy delayed burst damage as opposed to sustained damage. Point Blank tends to be more situational when using ranged weapons, as is Maximum Fury when using melee weapons. Since both abilities are primarily used for dealing heavy damage, the player should consider which is best in their situation.
A max level ATB Stagger Materia on Barret (additionally ATB Boost Materia when using a melee weapon) helps keep Barret's ATB topped up so that he may use Point Blank or Maximum Fury at full strength after he staggers an enemy with Focused Shot. Once Barret staggers an enemy with ATB Stagger, nearly half his max ATB will be refunded. Barret then has two highly effective options to reach full ATB depending on his weapon choice:
- If Barret is using a ranged weapon, unleashing Overcharge on the staggered enemy will refill the remainder of his ATB, and should then be followed up with either Point Blank or Maximum Fury.
- If Barret is using a melee weapon, he should attack once or twice with , then use ATB Boost to fully refill his ATB. From there he should use either Point Blank or Maximum Fury on the staggered enemy.
After using Point Blank, Barret can use his Limit (if he has it available) to deal even more damage, and reduce the time "wasted" in the limit break windup animation by giving it the purpose of allowing the mine from Point Blank to count down. If he is using Catastrophe, the explosion from Point Blank will trigger first, dealing heavy damage, being followed by four powerful hits from the limit break itself. If he is using Fire in the Hole, the limit break's initial shot will hit the target, followed by two explosions from both attacks, dealing massive burst damage in short succession.
In Intergrade, Point Blank's explosion after the delay is stronger, and the ability deals about 50% more total damage than its ranged counterpart, Maximum Fury. This gives much better incentive for Barret to use Point Blank over Maximum Fury when the situation calls for it.
As with all of Barret's abilities, the player can tap to cancel into his recharge animation at the end of the ability to reduce the cooldown of Overcharge/Overrun by 7 seconds. This can save some time on his recharge animation, as a part of the animation will be split with his ability recovery time. This in turn can allow him to use his Overcharge or Overrun more frequently.
