Deumion, before summoning Phrekyos to confront the party
Phrekyos is one of two added superbosses in the 20th Anniversary and iOS versions of Final Fantasy II. He is summoned by Deumion who uses the beast to test the party's worthiness. If the party kills Deumion, Phrekyos will appear in the lowest floor at Deumion's place at the Arcane Sanctuary.

Phrekyos's level[]
Phrekyos's stats and abilities depend on the number of main story Key Terms the party has accumulated. Arcane Labyrinth Key Terms do not count towards Phrekyos's power level. There are seven power levels, each one corresponding to a certain number of Key Terms learned, with more powerful versions being fought the more words are learned. The most powerful version can only be fought if the player has learned all fifteen of the main story's Key Terms.
- Level 1 Phrekyos will be fought if the party knows 4 or less Key Terms.
- Level 2 Phrekyos will be fought if the party knows 5-6 Key Terms.
- Level 3 Phrekyos will be fought if the party knows 7-8 Key Terms.
- Level 4 Phrekyos will be fought if the party knows 9-10 Key Terms.
- Level 5 Phrekyos will be fought if the party knows 11-12 Key Terms.
- Level 6 Phrekyos will be fought if the party knows 13-14 Key Terms.
- Level 7 Phrekyos will be fought if the party knows 15 Key Terms.
Battle[]
Depending on which version the party faces, Phrekyos will use different attacks at different rates. Its normal physical attack will also inflict a different status ailment each time:
- Phrekyos 1: Attack-Venom (100%)
- Phrekyos 2: Attack-Paralysis (80%), Gaze V (20%)
- Phrekyos 3: Attack-Sleep (70%), Blaze XVI (20%), Gaze V (10%)
- Phrekyos 4: Attack-Poison (70%), Icestorm XVI (10%), Blaze XVI (10%), Gaze V (10%)
- Phrekyos 5: Attack-Stone (65%), Thunderbolt XVI (10%), Icestorm XVI (10%), Blaze XVI (10%), Gaze V (5%)
- Phrekyos 6: Attack-Confuse (40%), Poison Cloud XVI (20%), Boulders IX (20%), Thunderbolt XVI (10%), Blaze XVI (10%)
- Phrekyos 7: Attack-Instant KO (50%), Blaze XVI (20%), Starfall XVI (10%), Thunderbolt XVI (10%), Icestorm XVI (10%)
Strategy[]
Depending on which stage of the game the player is in, their available options will differ each time.
Early versions of Phrekyos use petrification moves, so equipping Golden Shields (can be found in some early Arcane Labyrinth levels) or having Gold Needles on hand will help circumvent this, as it is unlikely the player has access to or levelled Esuna high enough to heal it.
Raising the party's defense and evasion with Protect and Blink will mitigate most of Phrekyos's damage. Later forms will start using elemental and magic attacks and the ailment associated with its physical attack will be more debilitating. The party should add Shell and Barrier to their defensive buffs, Barrier especially important to resist the ailments.
Osmose can be used to drain all of Phrekyos's MP, preventing it from using any of its skills and be forced to only use normal attacks. Sap cannot be used for this as Phrekyos absorbs Spectral element.
Since Phrekyos either resists or absorbs all elements, it is better to hit with physical attacks and use Haste, Berserk and Aura Lv3 or higher to increase the damage. Non-elemental magic like Holy, Flare and Ultima are also effective attack options when they become available later in the game.
Reward[]
After defeating Phrekyos, Deumion will recognize the party's potential and will ask what are they searching for. Depending on the party's answer and the Key Terms they have used in the three Arcane Labyrinths, they will be awarded either an Elixir or a character's Ultimate weapon.
Also, telling him the Destruction Key Term will prompt a battle against Deumion himself with the Destroy Tome as a reward, while giving him the Light of Hope key item will award the party the unique Revive Tome.
