Description
Phoenix Down is a recovery item item in Final Fantasy VII that revives one ally from Death with 25% Max HP. Phoenix Down also has a 25% chance of instantly killing an undead target when used upon them.

Phoenix Down is an exceptionally important item, as it is the only way for the player to revived Knocked Out allies until they obtain the Revive Materia from Junon. Phoenix Downs remain the most effective way to revive in and out of battle for cheap until obtaining Life2 or late in the game when the player can obtain the vastly superior Angel Whisper Enemy Skill.
Phoenix Down can be used to instantly kill undead enemies, and is the quickest way of defeating Gi Nattak.
Late into the game the player can link Final Attack with resurrective Materia to lessen the need of using Phoenix Down.
Etymology[]
The English name refers to the down feathers of a Phoenix. In Greek mythology, a phoenix or phenix (Greek: φοῖνιξ phoinix; Latin: phoenix, phœnix, fenix) is a long-lived bird that is cyclically regenerated or reborn. Associated with the sun, a phoenix obtains new life by arising from the ashes of its predecessor. According to some sources, the phoenix dies in a show of flames and combustion, although there are other sources that claim that the legendary bird dies and simply decomposes before being born again. According to some texts, the phoenix could live over 1,400 years before rebirth.
