Cures KO.

Description

The Phoenix Down is a revival item in Final Fantasy IX. It resurrects one target with minimal HP both in battle and on the field when used from the menu. When used on the undead, it will either leave them with <10 HP, or kills them outright. The Phoenix Down has the same effect as the Phoenix Pinion, the difference being that Phoenix Pinions cannot be used on the field and Phoenix Downs cannot be equipped as an add-on.

Mechanics[]

FFIX Phoenix Down

Using a Phoenix Down in battle.

Phoenix Downs are used during battle and on the field to revive KO'd allies to minimal HP. If the target is undead or Zombiefied, they will be reduced to 1–9 HP 90% of the time, and killed outright 10% of the time. Chemist does not affect Phoenix Downs.

Use[]

Phoenix Downs are useful revival items that are also great to use against undead enemies to either leave them in minimal health, ready for Quina to eat.

When the player has a healer, they can also use Life instead of a Phoenix Down. Phoenix Down, Phoenix Pinion, and Life all have the same battle animation.

Synthesizing a Phoenix Down with a Gysahl Green produces a Phoenix Pinion.

Etymology[]

In Greek mythology, a phoenix or phenix (Greek: φοῖνιξ phoinix; Latin: phoenix, phœnix, fenix) is a long-lived bird that is cyclically regenerated or reborn. Associated with the sun, a phoenix obtains new life by arising from the ashes of its predecessor. According to some sources, the phoenix dies in a show of flames and combustion, although there are other sources that claim that the legendary bird dies and simply decomposes before being born again. According to some texts, the phoenix could live over 1,400 years before rebirth. In the context of Final Fantasy IX, this refers to the eidolon Phoenix.
