Phoenix is an optional level 5 summon in Final Fantasy V. An extremely powerful summon, Phoenix uses the ability Flames of Rebirth, which revives one KO'd party member to full HP and MP, and deals fire-elemental damage to all enemies. Phoenix is one of the iconic summoned monsters found in Final Fantasy.
Phoenix can be used via Summon and Call once obtained; with the latter, the summoner uses no MP. Unlike most summons, Phoenix cannot be used via Magic Lamp.
Obtained[]
Phoenix is obtained at the top of the Phoenix Tower. After beating the dungeon and reaching the top, Lenna flashes back to when she had to decide whether to cut off the tongue of Hiryuu to save her mother. Whether she refuses or not, the party obtains the summon.
Stats[]
Ability | MP cost | Power | Effect |
---|---|---|---|
Flames of Rebirth | 99 | 105 | Fire-elemental damage to all enemies. |
The damage component of Flames of Rebirth is calculated as follows:
As a summon, there is no split damage property, and Flames of Rebirth's damage is unaffected by reflect.
If the target absorbs fire, it is healed instead of damaged; if it is immune to fire, the attack misses. If the target resists fire, the Attack modifier in the formula is halved, but if it is weak to fire, the modifier is doubled and the attack ignores the target's Magic Defense.
Several pieces of equipment increase the power of elemental attacks by 50%. The bonus is applied before subtracting the opponent's Magic Defense. The weapons that boost fire are the Black Mage's Flame Rod and Magus Rod, and the Geomancer's Rune Chime. The Mix Elemental Power empowers all elements.
Use[]
Phoenix performs Flames of Rebirth when summoned. This deals strong fire-elemental damage to all enemies (comparable to damage Titan can deal with his Gaia's Wrath), but more importantly, revives a defeated party member for full HP and MP. This makes it a stronger spell than Arise, which only fully heals one's HP, but has half the MP cost. Nonetheless, Flames of Rebirth is overall a more turn-efficient ability to use.
Flames of Rebirth should be used when healing spellcasting characters (such as those who are Mimes equipping multiple spellsets) to restore their MP. This is because characters focusing on physical damage have less need for MP, and so reviving their HP with Arise is sufficient. Though Flames of Rebirth deals decent damage, its prohibitive MP cost means it should not be used for this purpose compared to damage-focused summons available at this point in the game, like Syldra, Leviathan, and Bahamut. Equipping a Gold Hairpin helps mitigate the steep MP cost.
When used with Dualcast, Phoenix can be used alongside a different summon to both revive a fallen ally and deal more damage.

Etymology[]
phoenix or phenix (Greek: φοῖνιξ phoinix; Latin: phoenix, phœnix, fenix) is a long-lived bird that is cyclically regenerated or reborn. Associated with the sun, a phoenix obtains new life by arising from the ashes of its predecessor. According to some sources, the phoenix dies in a show of flames and combustion, although there are other sources that claim that the legendary bird dies and simply decomposes before being born again. According to some texts, the phoenix could live over 1,400 years before rebirth.
