Concept artwork for Final Fantasy VII Remake.
Phantom (ファントム, Fantomu?) is a recurring creature in the Final Fantasy series. Appearing as both a hostile creature and a summoned monster, it is always a ghostly undead creature.
Appearances[]
Final Fantasy VI[]
Phantom is an esper acquired in the Magitek Research Facility. When summoned, it uses Ghostly Veil to grant Invisible to the entire party, making it a powerful tool against physically-oriented enemies. Phantom also gradually teaches Gravity, Vanish, and Berserk to its wielder, and grants a +10% boost to MP gain upon leveling up.
Final Fantasy VII Remake[]
The Phantom is an enemy encountered in the Sector 5 Slums as part of the "Missing Children" odd job, as well as in the Shinra Combat Simulator. The Phantom can be a tricky opponent as it will regularly vanish from sight, only to reappear right next to the player and attack with its claws.
Final Fantasy X[]
Phantoms are a genus of uncommon undead fiends. While the genus debuted in Final Fantasy X, there is no common Phantom in X and the genus would go unnamed until its Sphere Break coin appeared in Final Fantasy X-2.
Final Fantasy X-2[]
The common Phantom is an enemy encountered in the Ruin Depths and Via Infinito. They can be dangerous foes owing to their Oversoul Fever ability, which can force its allies to enter the Oversoul state.
Final Fantasy XI[]
The Phantom is a variety of ghost that can appear on the ships bound for Selbina and Mhaura at night.
The Final Fantasy Legend[]
The Phantom is an enemy encountered on the 5th floor of the Tower, and a potential transformation for the party's monster units.
Final Fantasy Legend II[]
The Phantom is an enemy encountered on the Volcano, Race World, and the Race Course, and a potential transformation for the party's monster units.
Final Fantasy Airborne Brigade[]
Final Fantasy Record Keeper[]
Final Fantasy VI's Phantom is one of the Rank 3 dark-elemental magicites. When summoned it uses Ultra Ghostly Veil to raise the party's holy resistance two levels and grant them a barrier that blocks one holy attack. Phantom's attacks are Death, Dark, and Banish; they respectively inflict instant death on an enemy, deal dark-elemental damage, and grant a party member a barrier that blocks a holy attack.
Chocobo's Dungeon 2[]
Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within[]
Phantoms are the ghosts of an aggressive extraterrestrial race and the main antagonists of The Spirits Within. Initially thought to be a deliberate invading force via a meteorite known as the Leonid Meteor, it is eventually revealed that the Phantoms are restless spirits from their long-dead home planet, the Meteor being part of the planet's remains.
Etymology[]
A phantom is a ghost, a physical manifestation of the soul or spirit of a deceased person.
