Petrify is a status in Final Fantasy VII that flags the target as defeated for Game Over purposes and is thus similar to the Death status. Petrified targets cannot change in almost any way, not gain or lose HP or MP, and not be applied with any other status effect besides Small. If the character gains All Lucky 7s right as they are about to petrify due to Slow-numb, they will keep attacking even after the Petrification takes effect as long as there are enemies present. Petrify does not last after battle. Petrified enemies are considered defeated but do not yield EXP. The item dedicated to healing Petrify is Soft.

FFVII Break

The Break spell.

Petrify is a powerful status as it can instantly eliminate enemies from the fight. However, the player cannot make use of the status until around Cosmo Canyon by getting the Vagyrisk Claw from the rare Bagrisk, which is a rare item in itself, and will not gain access to the Contain Materia until towards the later half of the game, at which point Petrify will not be as useful.

The player should beware the status at the Battle Square as contracting it instantly ends a player's run.
