Final Fantasy Wiki

Petrification is a status in Final Fantasy X-2 that turns the target to gray stone and immobilizes them. The character will shatter if physically attacked and is removed from the fight. Petrification does not wear off after battle. Petrification is a lose condition, i.e. if all of the player's party members get petrified, it will result in Game Over. It can be considered a more dangerous lose condition than Death as if a character is shattered, they cannot be revived in that same battle. Likewise, if a character fighting Chac is using a special dressphere and she is hit with Chac's unblockable Stony Glare attack, a Game Over will also occur. The special dressphere's supporting components will also simultaneously receive the Petrification status.

Any enemy that receives Petrification will be instantly removed from battle. If four enemies are petrified at once (e.g. with a Petrify Grenade), only up to three petrified enemies will explode at a time with the fourth one exploding shortly after. As with Final Fantasy X, any aerial enemies that get petrified will instantly fall to the ground before shattering.
