Petrification is a status in Final Fantasy X. A petrified character will be unable to act until the status is cured. If all characters in the party are petrified (or KO'd), the player will get a Game Over.

Mechanics[]

While petrified units can still be targeted, they are rendered immune from all damage and status-causing attacks until cured. However, attacks have a chance to shatter petrified characters, removing them from battle, while characters hit with a petrification attack that sends their HP to zero are guaranteed to shatter.

When fighting underwater, characters inflicted with petrification will immediately sink to the bottom and shatter as well. Shattered characters cannot be revived or switched out until after the battle ends, at which point they are brought back with 1 HP remaining. A character that is hit with an attack that reduces their HP to 0 at the same time they are petrified will instantly shatter. Enemies that are petrified will instantly shatter as well. Ability Points are rewarded for enemies defeated via petrification, though enemies cannot be Overkilled this way.

Unlike KO, a character's hidden CT gauge is not reset by petrification, though any status effects that were on the victim before being petrified will still be removed. Enhancements such as Cheer and Eccentrick will be retained, however.

If the character who was to throw a blitzball to Tidus during Blitz Ace as per the affection mechanics is petrified, someone else will throw it or the ball comes out of nowhere.
