Thalaos and Perykos from FFXIV

Perykos and Thalaos.

Perykos and Thalaos (ペリュコスとサラオス, Peryukosu to Saraosu?) are two mythological sea serpents in Final Fantasy XIV. According to the myth, Llymlaen created them to fill the world with water and thus created the oceans.

History[]

Creation myth[]

When Llymlaen was born, she saw that the world was dry and decided that it needed water. She took the water created by her grandmother and expanded it to the seas of the world, creating the sea serpents Thalaos and Perykos to do this. From the serpents' mouths flowed forth a never-ending fount of water, which eventually created Hydaelyn's seas. When Llymlaen was satisfied with the water level, she sealed the serpents in an island to prevent him from flooding the world. To ensure that no man could find the serpents and use them for evil, she enchanted the island, making it wander the seas, becoming known as the "Swallowtail Roam".[1][2]

Upper La Noscea concept art from FFXIV

Concept art of the bones in upper La Noscea.

The myth of the serpents has become quite well known, notably in La Noscea, where Limsa Lominsa has the motto "Till Sea Swallows All" alluding to a belief that the serpents will break free and fill the world with water. People are often seen believing that large sea serpents are in fact the serpents mentioned in the myths. Notably, the giant set of bones found in upper La Noscea have been named "Thalaos". These bones were once located deep beneath the sea, but tectonic activity caused the land to rise countless years ago, exposing the shells and bones. Also, the skeletons of two serpents found in the caves at Cassiopeia Hollow have also been named "Perykos and Thalaos".[1]

In year 1562 of the Sixth Astral Era, an islet suddenly appeared in the Rhotano Sea without any explanation. Because the people of Limsa Lominsa speculated that it could be the mythical Swallowtail Roam, where Llymlaen chained the twin serpents, the Knights of the Barracuda named it "Seal Rock". At the same time there were reports of a colossal sea serpent being spotted in the waters and this strengthened this belief. Many factions planned to claim any treasures stored on the island, but the treasure found was eventually stolen.[2]
