Will honor save one from the knife in the dark? Virtue from the poisoned wine? I think not.

Ser Paulecrain

Ser Paulecrain de Fanouilley is a non-playable character in Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward. He is a member of the Heavens' Ward.

History[]

Early life[]

Paulecrain rose from poverty by his skill with the lance alone. Although he was taken into the service of House Fortemps for his talented spearwork, he was dismissed after assaulting a noble of the House.[2]

Some time later, he crossed paths with Ser Grinnaux at the Forgotten Knight, and traded barbs over drinks until their heated conversation escalated into a brawl. An unusual kinship arose between them and the dishonored Paulecrain was taken in by House Dzemael, who found him an invaluable addition for his willingness to carry out questionable tasks others would not. For his loyalty, he was granted a knighthood, and he remained close friends with Ser Grinnaux.[1][2]

Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward[]

Ser Paulecrain and Ser Grinnaux de Dzemael arrested Alphinaud Leveilleur and Tataru Taru, accusing them of heresy. As the Warrior of Light could not call upon the Lord Commander in saving those accused by the Heavens' Ward, they challenged both Ser Grinnaux and Ser Paulecrain to a trial by combat to rescue their fellow Scions.

Ser Paulecrain, alongside his fellow Heavens' Ward, joined Thordan VII in the Singularity Reactor after the Warrior of Light defeated Lahabrea and Igeyorhm. The knights transformed into the Knights of the Round and assisted King Thordan in combat against the Warrior of Light. Upon defeat, Paulecrain and the other knights fell to the ground, and are encompassed in a swell of aetheric light.

Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker[]

A man who had been recovering in Saint Vaindreau's Grace, a civilian hospital in the Firmament, succumbed to the corruption of dynamis between his aether, triggered by the coming Final Days.[3] The man, naming himself "Vaindreau", was an Allagan cloned body found within Azys Lla meant to be used to resummon King Thordan, instead causing the souls of the Heavens' Ward to awaken inside it. He claimed himself to be a member of the Heavens' Ward, though he could not remember exactly which soul in his thoughts was meant to be his. The hospital ward Loverick informed 'Vaindreau' of the death of the Heavens' Ward and Thordan VII, who felt his purpose and place in the world null with no archbishop to protect. With their souls still tempered, Vaindreau escaped the hospital, wandering into the streets of Ishgard. He was noticed by Erenville right before his transformation into the blasphemy Profane Fafnir.

As the blasphemy, the souls of the Ward flew low over Ishgard, near the rooftops of the Vault, taking refuge near the crashed airship they had used to previously flee Azys Lla, the personal airship of Thordan VII before his death. Aymeric de Borel summoned Profane Fafnir to the Vault's summit, who uses the archbishop's coronet to call forth "his knights". Aymeric, Artoirel de Fortemps, and the Warrior of Light fought the blasphemy to lay the memory and souls of Paulecrain and his fellow knights to rest.

Characteristics[]

Appearance[]

Paulecrain is a Wildwood Elezen with brown skin, white hair kept in a short ponytail, and hazel eyes. He has a scar over his left eye, which is covered with a white eye patch. He wears Ward Knight's attire, a form of pure white Adamantite armor with dark blue trimmings and bears his order's crest. In battle he wields the polearm Winter, an all-white spear of silver with blue steel accents.

Personality[]

Ser Paulecrain is regarded as dangerous and unkind, and as one who revels in fights and conflict. His belief in Halone is whole, yet he is not above using his religious authority to treat both guilty criminals and framed innocents roughly. He enjoys the freedom given to him both by House Dzemael and the Heavens' Ward, and works closely with his brother-in-arms, Grinnaux de Dzemael.

He named his weapon "Winter" from a past lover who once declared "[his] heart is as cold as winter", which he was quite fond of. It is likely his title "Coldfire" comes from a similar insult.[2]

Gameplay[]

Ser Paulecrain Coldfire is fought during the special instance in the Main Scenario Quest Divine Intervention Divine Intervention. Later Ser Paulecrain is fought once more as one of King Thordan's knights in Singularity Reactor and Dragonsong's Reprise.

In Final Fantasy XIV: Stormblood, Ser Paulecrain is fought as a simulacrum of memory, alongside his fellow Heavens' Ward, in the Dark Knight level 70 duty Our Compromise Our Compromise.

In Endwalker, Ser Paulecrain and his fellow knights' memories lay within the blasphemy Profane Fafnir, and is fought one final time in the Magical DPS level 90 duty Ever March Heavensward Ever March Heavensward.
