Spear adorned with brilliant gems. Originally made as a decoration.

Description

The Partisan is Freya's third spear in Final Fantasy IX. It teaches her High Tide, a support ability that lets her build toward Trance faster, and Lancer, a Dragon ability which lets her damage an enemy's HP and MP while replenishing some of her own mana.

Obtain[]

The Partisan is first bought from Cleyra for 1600 gil, and afterward also from Lindblum, Dragon's Gate, Fossil Roo, Alexandria, and Treno. It is also stolen from Zorn in Alexandria Castle.

Mechanics[]

The Partisan's damage dealt with a normal Attack is determined as follows everywhere but within Ipsen's Castle:

Base = 25 - Enemy's Defense
Bonus = Strength + A random value 0 ... [(Level + Strength) / 8]
Damage = Base * Bonus

The damage is then modified by variables like Freya's row position and equipped Killer abilities and MP Attack, as well as the enemy's Protect. Under Mini, her Bonus would be 1.

When in Ipsen's Castle, the stronger weapons do less damage than weaker weapons, and the Base part of the damage formula is altered to:

Base = 35 - Enemy's Defense

Use[]

The Partisan is Freya's strongest offering through the battles in Cleyra and Alexandria Castle, but after the events there, Freya will not be in the player's party until after Zidane Tribal returns from the Outer Continent, and by this time, the player can buy the superior Ice Lance. The abilities the Partisan teaches are moderately useful. High Tide can be good for her as Freya has one of the better Trances in the game, though it is the luck of the draw whether she hits Trance in a tough battle to make use of it. Lancer lets her damage an enemy and their MP while replenishing her own MP.

Etymology and origin[]

A partisan is a type of polearm that was used in Europe during the Middle Ages. It consisted of a spearhead mounted on a long shaft (usually made of wood) with protrusions on the sides which aided the user in parrying sword thrusts.

Freya's Partisan is based on the recurring spear from Final Fantasy V, Final Fantasy VI, and Final Fantasy Tactics.
