Description

Parry materia is a Complete Materia Complete Materia in Final Fantasy VII Remake and "Episode INTERmission". It allows a character to quickly deal damage while performing a dodge roll. At level 2, this also increases their ATB gauge.

Different characters have a different parry animation. For instance Cloud performs a cartwheel, while Tifa slides across the ground. Parry was improved in Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade.

Obtained[]

Parry materia is unlocked after completing Battle Intel Report 12 to increase the stagger damage bonus on an opponent to 200%, at which point it can be purchased from Chadley. The first copy costs 100 gil, further copies being priced at 2,000 gil. To raise the stagger bonus on an enemy, the player can use Tifa's Triangle abilities and Aerith's Ray of Judgment on a staggered enemy, whose stagger can be locked in place with Stop Stop. Fat Chocobo also has an especially long stagger, making it a suitable target for rapid stagger bonus boosting.

In INTERmission, Yuffie starts with a parry materia already equipped to her.

Use[]

Equipping parry materia will cause a character to deal damage while performing a dodge roll. If players dodge-roll often, they can benefit from the damage output increase provided by the materia. Furthermore, leveling it up will also cause successful parries to increase a character's ATB gauge, allowing them to more often use abilities and spells. The parry animation also has guard frames to reduce damage taken even if the enemy attack lands.

Parry materia is best on Cloud and Tifa, who are both melee characters. Between the two, Tifa has better mobility and is more likely to be dodging attacks than parrying them, whereas Cloud's slower mobility means he will more likely rely on parrying, and his sword means his attacks have a wider area of effect. Cloud can also use Parry to remain in Punisher Mode and still dodge roll, with the parry animation giving him guard frames against projectiles that Punisher Mode normally lacks. Tifa has the fastest parry animation, both in terms of speed and recovery, being actually very effective as an offensive maneuver to close the gap between her opponents. In addition, she has the only parry that is able to launch targets. While it only works against enemies with a low interrupt defense, she can use it before an attack combo against them to juggle them in the air.

Though still useful on Barret and Aerith, it is more of a luxury slot and less useful for damage output. Barret has the slowest parry, though this also makes it easiest to parry through attacks with since it lasts a long time; Barret still recovers faster through the use of a Parry than a block; his animation has him performing a shoulder tackle, which can actually briefly stun weaker enemies. While Aerith also benefits less from the damage output aspect of Parry, she can still benefit from the ATB boost and faster recovery from parrying an attack, which is actually faster than her regular dodge roll, and covers more distance.

Players who rely on parrying more often and build more towards physical damage will find the parry materia useful. It has a similar role to Deadly Dodge Materia Deadly Dodge Materia, which provides a counterattack after dodging an attack. Which the player uses depends on their playstyle and which characters they control. Deadly Dodge does not provide an ATB increase from using it, but otherwise has similar effects.

Parry materia can can be paired with HP Absorption Materia HP Absorption Materia to heal the character after successfully parrying an attack in addition to the usual damage dealt. Equipping this setup results in free healing, though very little. The materia can also be used with Steadfast Block Materia Steadfast Block Materia to further increase ATB and reduce damage taken.

In Intergrade, Parry can be cancelled into and out of faster and more consistently. Characters will also be able to parry into a block flawlessly, with no period of vulnerability. Doing so can help to keep characters from taking full damage and being interrupted if the parry animation doesn't last through the entire enemy attack. This is especially helpful on Cloud, who can now parry directly into and out of a Punisher counter if needed with ease.

In "Episode INTERmission", Yuffie's parry is to quickly spin forward. It has the second fastest animation, after Tifa's.

Characters under the effects of Toad Toad can still use the parry command to leap upwards, spinning.
