Red Panther

Vampire Cat

The three types of panther.

Panther is a family of monsters in Final Fantasy Tactics. They are among the most common enemies found in the early game, but are stronger than goblins, with higher physical attributes and mobility. They are weak to the earth element. Like all monsters, panthers have innate Counter. They can be first encountered in chapter 1.

Much like other monsters, panthers can be recruited to Ramza's company if it has an orator with the Entice ability, or any job with the Speechcraft command and the Beast Tongue support ability, or any job with the Tame support ability. Such as other recruitable creatures, panthers lay eggs (as long there are enough free slots available on the party roster), which can spawn three variations: red panther, coeurl, and vampire cat. Each allied panther variant gains access to a new ability when next to a human unit with the Beastmaster support ability.

Like most monsters, panthers can be poached and turned into items that can be bought at the Poachers' Dens found in trade cities during chapters 3 and 4.

Ranks[]

Each variant of the panther family has similar stat growths, with average physical attack power and speed, and high physical evasion, as well high mobility and jump attributes. All panther variations have innate Ignore Elevation passive.

Stats are increased slightly between each rank. All variants of the family have access to Claw, their physical attack command.

Rank I: Red Panther[]

A nimble quadruped capable of bounding effortlessly across steep terrain. It lurks in the shadows as it hunts its prey.

The Ivalice Chronicles' description

The most common type of panther, often fought alongside goblins, is the red panther (though its model is not actually red). Despite being the lowest rank, red panthers have the highest HP of all panther variants. They have access to Venom Fang, which can inflict the Poison status effect to a single adjacent unit.

If next to an ally with the Beastmaster support ability, red panthers gains access to Cat Scratch, which deals random physical attack to a single adjacent unit and ignores the physical evasion stat.

Rank II: Coeurl[]

A variety of panther that uses the venom it secretes from its fangs to inflict prey with status ailments.

The Ivalice Chronicles' description

Also known as Cuar in the original Final Fantasy Tactics for the PlayStation. They have access to both Cat Scratch and Venom Fang.

If next to an ally with the Beastmaster support ability, coeurls gains access to Blaster, which can inflict Stop or Stone to a single distant unit.

Coeurl is a recurring monster in the Final Fantasy series, associated with instant death via its Blaster.

Rank III: Vampire Cat[]

A variety of panther with a fondness for feeding on the blood of its prey, especially that of humans.

The Ivalice Chronicles' description

Also known as Vampire in the original Final Fantasy Tactics for the PlayStation. They have access to both Cat Scratch and Blaster, making them the most dangerous of its kind. However, they have the lowest magickal attack power of all variants, meaning the chances of success of Blaster, which is based on the magick attribute, is not as high.

If next to an ally with the Beastmaster support ability, vampire cats gains access to Blood Drain, which deals damage to a single adjacent unit and heals the user for the same damage inflicted, and has a chance to inflicting the Vampire status effect.

As party members[]

Monsters from the panther family can be decent assets to the player's party, with their high mobility and evasion making them effective frontline units. The vampire cat is considered the best among its kind thanks to it having access to Blaster, which can instantly defeat an enemy if they are petrified.

Etymology[]

Panther is a mythological creature that resembles a big cat with a multicoloured hide. Under medieval belief, after feasting, the panther will sleep in a cave for three days, then roars emitting a sweet odor that draws in any creatures who smell it (the dragon being the only creature immune). They are eaten by the panther, and the cycle begins again.

The term panther may also refer to the big cats leopard, cougar or jaguar. Black and white variations also exist.

The coeurl is a fictional alien race created by science-fiction writer A. E. van Vogt. Coeurls also appear in other fantastical environments, such as in Dungeons & Dragons (as "Displacer Beasts"). Coeurls are generally described to be feline with longer forelimbs and tentacles.

The strongest form is known as the vampire cat. Vampires are mythological or folkloric beings who subsist by feeding on the life essence, generally in the form of blood, of living creatures. Although vampiric entities have been recorded in many cultures, and may go back to "prehistoric times", the term vampire was not popularized until the early 18th century.
