A fellow sphere hunter who accompanies Yuna in the Gullwings after the summoner had concluded her previous journey. Reticent when it comes to talking about herself, she does not take kindly to people poking into her past, but does care for her comrades.

Description

Paine is a playable character in Dissidia Final Fantasy Opera Omnia who can be recruited during Act 2, Chapter 4 of the main storyline.

Characteristics[]

Appearance[]

Paine wears a black leather ensemble complete with high-heeled boots, elbow-length gloves and a folded top. She wears a silver pendant threaded with a barbed wire chain.

Personality[]

Paine is a terse and sarcastic warrior who often snaps at people who ask her personal questions. Despite her reserve, she is hurt and angered when she is forgotten by her friends and acquaintances from Spira, especially Yuna. However, she is careful to place the blame solely with Materia. She is rather protective of Yuna and is easily angered when others threaten Yuna's peace of mind. Even while she is distressed over Yuna's situation, Paine is able to crack wise; for example, teasing Wakka for his future chubbiness.

Story[]

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow. (Skip section)

Paine is summoned by Materia after the party is deep into the World of Darkness. She is outraged when informed that Materia has excised all of Yuna's memories from after her pilgrimage. Paine brushes off Materia's instructions to consider Yuna and her companions different people and determines to make her own decisions.

When she meets a group of people mostly from Spira, Paine identifies each of them in turn but their conversation confirms that they lack any memory of her; Wakka even suggests that she may be an enemy. Paine is shocked by Yuna's solemn and guiltstricken attitude, being used to her as the cheerful Gullwing. The Warrior of Light suggests that Paine join them to resolve the differences in their memory. Paine agrees, as that had been her intention from the start. However, she brushes off the friendly overtures of others in the party and is skeptical when Serah assures her that things will work out.

Paine grows frustrated at Yuna's guilt and starts to argue with her. Seymour interrupts to give an unflattering history of Yuna's life after defeating Sin, calling her and Paine selfish for pursuing their own wishes. Paine attempts to set the record straight but has difficulty expressing herself, so she simply attacks Seymour. After the battle, Paine relents and explains her feelings to Quistis, Freya, Ramza, and Tidus. At her request, they relay her wishes to Yuna: that Yuna stop trying to hard to regain her memories just for Paine's sake and to be positive rather than fretting about Seymour's twisted version of events.

After Yuna receives her lost memories from the Brilliance of her Dark Manikin, Paine brushes off her apology. Yuna jokes back with one of Paine's signature threats, flustering Paine. Still, Paine is relieved to see Yuna back to the cheerful friend she knew and the two of them hope to see Rikku again soon. They resolve to treasure what they have in the present, and Paine threatens to bring Tidus a "world of hurt" if he makes Yuna worry again. When they confront Seymour a second time, they easily dismiss his continued attempts at manipulation.

The group fight their way through the Pandaemonium summoned by Emperor Mateus, eventually encountering the Planesgorger larva used to create the castle. When the group declares their resolve to fight for what's important to them, Paine asks Yuna to say "it". In spite of Yuna protesting that there are too many people for the slogan to work, Paine strikes her pose and says "everyone, in position!" Yuna, though without her pistols, strikes her own pose and adds "it's showtime!"

After escaping the partial collapse of Pandaemonium, Paine takes the airship's controls herself.

Allusions[]

  • One scene in Act 2, Chapter 4 has the group comparing Paine's personality to Squall's, with everything Squall thinks being mirrored in Paine's dialogue. Squall's personality was used as a template during the development of Paine's character.
  • Paine's Finish Burst, Gullwings Rush, references the starting Dresspheres of the Gullwings. Beginning with Yuna's Gunner Dressphere, then changing weapons to Rikku's Thief Dressphere and finishing with her own Warrior Dressphere.
  • Paine is joined by Cecil (Dark Knight) for her Force Mode and is partner to Sice:
    • For Cecil, both are Dark Knights - although Paine's starting dressphere is Warrior, she also has access to the Dark Knight ability Black Sky, her FR weapon is her Dark Knight weapon and the animation starts similarly to the animation of when one of the girls changes into Dark Knight, the only difference being she doesn't come out of the floor.
    • For Sice, both girls have similar personalities, more reserved and apparently harsh, but actually caring deep down.
