Cause Poison, Darkness, and Silence

Description

Pain is an indirect magic spell in Final Fantasy VIII. The spell inflicts three status effects: Darkness, Silence, and Poison. It can be junctioned to inflict or provide immunity to all three statuses, though it also provides very strong stat boosts.

Obtained[]

Pain is a rare, high-level spell drawn from stronger enemies, such as Tri-Face or Elnoyle. It can be refined from Curse Spikes with Diablos's ST Mag-RF. A good source of Curse Spikes are Tri-Faces and their cards.

It can also be drawn from a field draw point in the Centra Ruins and a world map draw point near the Dollet Communications Tower.

Stats[]

Use[]

Pain inflicts the Darkness, Silence, and Poison status effects all at once. This means it reduces a targets' hit rate by 75%, prevents them from casting magic spells, and poisons them to deal non-elemental damage over time.

Status ailment spells' effectiveness is calculated by the following formula:

If (Status Defense >= 200) Target does not get the status
else: Infliction% = Magic Stat/4 - Target's Spirit/4
Infliction% = Infliction% - Status Defense + 200
Status Defense starts at 100 (0%) and the cap is 200 (100%).

Pain is cast using the Magic command, Selphie's Slot Limit Break, or Rinoa's Angel Wing. Casting Pain in battle increases compatibility with Siren by 0.6, but lowers compatibility with Cerberus and Carbuncle by 0.2. Casting Pain doesn't raise compatibility with Doomtrain.

Though Pain is a strong spell to cast, it is more useful when junctioned. It can provide relatively strong stat boosts, especially to Magic, Spirit, Strength, Luck, and Vitality. More importantly, it can be junctioned to ST-Atk-J or ST-Def-J to inflict all three statuses at once with a single physical attack, or to provide resistance to the three statuses as well as Curse. With 100 Pains junctioned to ST-Def-J, it can provide immunity to four status effects from a single junction slot.

Elnoyle, Fujin (2nd), and Griever use Pain against the player party. It can be reflected.
