Overclock is a gameplay concept in Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII. It is said that Lightning can use the Overclock to slow down time, or even freeze it, around her.[1] Usage of the Overclock reduces the thirteen day limit that Lightning has to save the world. The Overclock is activated through the new system of points, GP.[2]

Overclock concept in Final Fantasy XIII, the image for the similar gameplay mechanic appears in the top right hand corner.

  • When making the announcement trailer of Final Fantasy XIII, a concept similar to the Overclock system was used in the battle system demo. In fact, no battle system had yet been designed for Final Fantasy XIII at this point, and the trailer was merely a visual demo for the feel of the game the developers wanted to portray. It appears, however, that the demo was the direct influence in developing the Overclock system for Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII.
