The Ouya was a video game console released in March 2013 by developer Boxer8. Founded by game industry veteran Julie Uhrman, the project was originally supported by an online Kickstarter campaign. It ran on a version of the Android operating system, and all of its software was expected to be free-to-play. Being an Android platform, it was compatible with Google Play software.
Square Enix had given the console their official support, with Final Fantasy III becoming a launch title. However, poor sales, low-quality games, and questionable hardware design forced the developer out of business. Its brand and software assets were then acquired by Razer, a computer gaming hardware manufacturer founded in 2005. Razer followed up with the Forge TV set-top device that ran Android 5.x, but it also failed to gain a significant install base and was discontinued.
