Uwee hee hee! What have we here? I'm warning you, I'm armed... Eight-armed, that is! Uwee hee hee!

Orthros

Orthros is a boss in the Dawn of Souls and many succeeding versions of the original Final Fantasy, bar the Android version or Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster. He is found on Floor B20 of the Whisperwind Cove, and must be fought to progress further into the dungeon. He is better known as Ultros, a recurring boss from Final Fantasy VI.

Stats[]

Battle[]

Orthros is probably a bit easier than the preceding boss, Typhon, as he lacks any moves that can inflict Instant Death, so NulDeath is not a priority. His physical attacks, while quite powerful, should not trouble any party with Protera cast on them. He has a fairly high amount of HP, but his Defense stat is unimpressive compared to the other Whisperwind Cove bosses, so physical attacks can be used to full effect, and can be powered up with Haste, Saber and Temper. The only other attack he possesses is Ink, which attempts to blind the entire party, but will usually miss.

Etymology[]

In Greek mythology, Orthrus or Orthus was, according to the mythographer Apollodorus, a two-headed dog who guarded Geryon's cattle and was killed by Heracles. He was the offspring of the monsters Echidna and Typhon, and the brother of Cerberus, who was also a multi-headed guard dog. The Orthros of Final Fantasy has no connection with the mythical Orthros, save for their link to Typhon, which in the Greek myth was the father of Orthros and Cerberus.
