Restores HP. It cannot be used in the field. Equip as an Add-on.
Description
The Opal is a jewel in Final Fantasy IX that everyone can equip as an add-on, which can also be used during battle as a healing item. It teaches Shiva to Dagger and Blizzara to Vivi. One Opal is obtained as part of the story from Doctor Tot after the party returns from the Outer Continent, and afterward, amassing Opals in the inventory makes Shiva stronger when summoned.
Obtain[]
An Opal is first obtained as part of the story after the party returns from the Outer Continent. It also drops from Cerberus, Mover, Wraith (Blue Flame), and Freya (Mirror), and is stolen from Movers and Freya (Mirror). The player can farm them by bringing Freya to Oeilvert.
Forgotten Plains chocograph.
Fourteen are found in the Forgotten Plains chocograph treasure, while nine are found in the Cold Lagoon chocograph treasure
. It is also synthesized in Daguerreo, Black Mage Village (endgame), and the Legendary Synthesis Shop for 100 gil, an Ore, and a Potion. Potions can be bought from shops, whereas Eiko can manufacture endless Ores with Jewel.
Mechanics[]
The Opal can be used as an item during battle, to restore HP equivalent to the total stock of Opals x84. Jewels are the only healing items that work on Zombiefied/undead targets. It can be a powerful healing item, but is unaffected by Chemist and cannot be used while in the field.
Holding onto many Opals makes Shiva's summon attack stronger; Diamond Dust attack power = 36 + No. of Opals.
Use[]
The Opal is useful for learning Shiva and Blizzara, though Vivi likely already has Blizzara and Shiva is among the weaker eidolons, meaning Dagger will have stronger ones by the time she can master Shiva. Collecting Opals makes Shiva's summon attack stronger.
As jewels do not grant stats, the player should unequip them after mastering the abilities they hold. The Opal is also a very powerful healing item the player can use mid-battle.
Etymology and origin[]
Opal is a hydrated amorphous form of silica classed as a mineraloid, unlike the other crystalline forms of silica, which are classed as minerals. It is deposited at a relatively low temperature and may occur in the fissures of almost any kind of rock. The internal structure of precious opal makes it diffract light; depending on the conditions in which it formed, it can take on many colors. Precious opal ranges from clear through white, gray, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, magenta, rose, pink, slate, olive, brown, and black. Of these hues, the reds against black are the most rare, whereas white and greens are the most common. It varies in optical density from opaque to semitransparent. Common opal, called "potch" by miners, does not show the display of color exhibited in precious opal. The jewels are based on real life birthstones. As such, when equipping as an add-on and if the player has all twelve jewels in their inventory (minus Ore), the jewels are listed in the same order as the birthstones where each gemstone represents a month.
