Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions description

Onion Shield (オニオンシールド, Onion Shīrudo?), also known as Onion, is a recurring shield in the series. It is the most powerful shield in the games it appears in, giving outstanding defenses but lacking any other special properties, such as that of the Adamant Shield or other such high-level shields. It is part of onion equipment.

Final Fantasy IIIEdit

Onion Shield is the strongest shield and is dropped by Yellow Dragon, Green Dragon, and Red Dragon. It can be equipped by the Onion Knight.

In the NES version, it provides 48 Defense, 48 Magic Defense, and 48% Evade. In the 3D versions, it provides 30 Defense, 30 Magic Defense, and +2 to all stats.

Final Fantasy IVEdit

Onion Shield is the strongest shield in the 3D remakes. It provides Defense equal to the user's Level/10, Stamina equal to the user's current Level/3, and resistance to all statuses except Berserk. It is obtained by trading a Blue Tail to the Tail Collector, and can be equipped by Cecil and Kain.

Final Fantasy XIVEdit

Onion Shield is a item level 90 shield equippable by Gladiator and its job Paladin. It can be obtained after clearing the main scenario quest "Through the Maelstrom" or through Aelina in Mor Dhona.

The onion, also known as the bulb onion or common onion, is used as a vegetable and is the most widely cultivated species of the genus Allium.

The adjective of onion refers to the Japanese metaphoric idiom of poverty, aptly named the "Onion Life", "peeling away one layer at a time and crying all the way". Alternatively, the term could come from the slang phrase "to know one's onions", meaning to be very versatile.
