The Onion Arrows are ammunition for bows in Final Fantasy XII. They are the weakest ammunition for bows and lack any special properties, but bows cannot be equipped without owning some kind of arrows. Owning the Onion Arrows means the player can use an unlimited amount, and arrows do not need a license to be equipped alongside a bow.
Obtain[]
Original[]
The Onion Arrows are bought for 100 gil from Rabanastre after obtaining the Sunstone but before defeating Belias, as well as from Nalbina Fortress, Dyce in Nam-Yensa Sandsea, Jahara, and Mt Bur-Omisace. They are found in a treasure in Dalmasca Westersand's Galtea Downs
, Barheim Passage's Op Sector 29
, Lhusu Mines' Shaft Entry
, Ogir-Yensa Sandsea's East Junction
, and the Tomb of Raithwall's Royal Passage
.
The player does not need to buy or find them, as Fran will join the party with the Onion Arrows already equipped. The player can also get another set from Supinelu in Jahara if the player sold the Jaya Stick.
Zodiac[]
The Onion Arrows set is sold for 100 gil in most shops, but the player never needs to buy them as Fran still joins the party with the Onion Arrows equipped, unless the player makes Vaan an Archer as his beginner job or he cannot equip a bow.
The arrows are found as a treasure in Dalmasca Estersand's Banks of the Nebra (60% chance to appear, 60% chance to be an item and not gil, 50% chance the item treasure is Onion Arrows without the Diamond Armlet equipped), Dalmasca Westersand's Corridor of Sand (65% chance to appear, 60% chance to be an item and not gil, 50% chance the item treasure is Onion Arrows without the Diamond Armlet equipped), as well as in the Trial Mode Stage 4 with the Diamond Armlet equipped.
Onion Arrows are still given by Supinelu in Jahara if the player sold the Jaya Stick.
Use[]
The Onion Arrows is the weakest set of arrows, adding but 1 point to the bow's power without any added statuses or elements. The player is meant to equip them if they have no better arrows to use, and Fran joins with her default bow and the Onion Arrows already equipped. The arrows can be swapped out as soon as the player gets any other arrow set. The other arrows are commonly available in the bazaar, sold in packs alongside bows.
Etymology and origin[]
Onion equipment is a recurring type of equipment in the Final Fantasy series, associated from the Onion Knight job that debuted in Final Fantasy III. The onion, also known as the bulb onion or common onion, is used as a vegetable and is the most widely cultivated species of the genus Allium.
In a 2020 Famitsu interview with Koichi Ishii and Hiromichi Tanaka about Final Fantasy III, Tanaka stated that he created the term "Onion Knight" after seeing Ishii's character design for the job, likening the shape of its helmet's large, white plume to that of an onion.[1]
Fans had previously speculated that "Onion Knight" refers to the Japanese metaphoric idiom "peeling away one layer at a time and crying all the way" (referring to poverty) or from the slang phrase "to know one's onions" (meaning to be very versatile).
