Final Fantasy Wiki

A film of oil coats the character, increasing vulnerability to fire. Remove with a Handkerchief.

Description

Oil is a status in Final Fantasy XII that triples the damage the affected takes from fire-based abilities, stacking with an enemy's fire weakness and fire-boosting equipment. Oil persists until cured, even after KO and is not healed with Esuna; the player will need to heal it with items or a Save Crystal.

Abilities[]

Spell Oil (Green Magicks)
Weapon Oil Bombs 25%

The Oil spell's success depends on various factors, but can be made to always succeed against susceptible targets when the caster equips the Indigo Pendant.

An oiled party member can use Stamp to pass it along to other targets.

The Nihopalaoa accessory reverses the effect of items, meaning the items designed to heal Oil will inflict it instead.

The ally-targeting gambit specifically for this status is called "Ally: status = Oil" and the self-targeting one is "Self: status = Oil" (though the ally-targeting gambit also affects self). In the original version, these gambits can be bought for 50 gil after the events at Draklor Laboratory. The enemy-targeting gambit is "Foe: status = Oil", and in the original is available after the events at Nalbina Dungeons for 50 gil. In the Zodiac versions, both gambits can be purchased for 70 gil after leaving the dungeons.

Enemies[]

Elementals and entites are immune to Oil, but most enemies are susceptible, even many bosses. Only few rare game are immune to Oil.

Use[]

Oil is good for increasing the player's damage output, as it will stack with other boosts, such as Faith and Bravery and Berserk, licenses, and especially Fire-potency equipment. It also works against some enemies that resist most other ailments, like Hell Wyrm or Disma. It also works against Silicon Tortoise, Enkidu, Slyt, Phoenix, and Famfrit. However, most bosses and marks are immune to Oil and the normal enemies that would be vulnerable do not need the damage boost to be defeated quickly.

The best fire attacks to use against oiled enemies are multi-cast Firaga with the Flame Staff off the player's own party when they have Reflect, Ardor, the fire-elemental shot with the Mithuna (best gun in Zodiac) or Fomalhaut (best gun in the original), and the Fiery Arrows with the Seitengrat (Easter egg best weapon in the Zodiac) or Burning Bow (fire potency bow). The player can also summon Belias after inflicting Oil.

Oil can be more useful in a New Game Minus playthrough to increase damage.
