A fell knight clad all in black, Odin roams paths long forgotten beneath the canopy of the Black Shroud.
There are none now alive who know the truth of when or by whom this elder primal was first summoned into the world. Ever vigilant as he sits astride his mighty steed, Sleipnir, it is said that Odin is driven solely by the desire to do battle with worthy foes.Official website description[1]
Odin is a primal featured in Final Fantasy XIV. Odin can be faced during both FATE Steel Reign and trial Urth's Fount. While Steel Reign has been in the game since release, Urth's Fount was not released until Patch 2.5 outside the FanFest.
Profile[]
Odin is a roaming primal. Unlike other primals, his essence is contained not within the land itself but within his sword, Zantetsuken. Rather than binding servants to his will to summon him with crystals like the primals of the beast tribes, he ensnares the soul of whoever takes up his blade and uses the aether of the Black Shroud to manifest himself once more. The minion's description hints that he is a character from northern mythologies, a deity wielding a Far Eastern blade known as the Zantetsuken he stole from an Auri warrior he killed.
History[]
Odin seems to be as old as the Third Astral Era, since it was around this time when Eureka created a primal version of the Zantetsuken from the myth. The weapon-like primal would possess mortal bodies, transforming them into Odin's image while riding Sleipnir, a horse blessed by the primal itself. This primal is the one who wanders the Black Shroud during the Seventh Umbral Era.
When Odin appears once more in the Shroud, the Order of the Twin Adder call upon the adventurers to travel defeat him. Though Odin himself vanishes upon his defeat, his sword remains; O-App-Pesi and E-Sumi-Yan study it and determine the true nature of Odin's existence before sending the blade back to Gridania to be sealed away forever. However, the soldier entrusted with the blade falls prey to Odin's will and flees with it, portending the eventual return of the Dark Divinity.
Despite being an ancient deity, when Fandaniel started his intention to unleash the Final Days, he reached to summon Lunar Odin from one of his towers, indicating that there are still Odin's worshippers in the present day. Unlike the original, Lunar Odin seems to be a primal in its entirety, and not just the weapon.
Gameplay[]
Here I stand—a god amongst men. Yet here I remain—a mere man amongst gods.
Odin
Odin is fought in the FATE Steel Reign and the trial Urth's Fount. While Steel Reign has been in the game since release, Urth's Fount was not released until Patch 2.5, Before the Fall. Apart from the trial at Urth's Fount, he can appear in any one of the four Shrouds around Gridania—his appearance heralded by a sudden change in the weather called Tension: skies darkening and motes of light floating in the air. Odin will always appear as the race of the previous adventurer to deal the killing blow, albeit clad in the same armor. Odin's level varies between 50 and 60 during Steel Reign. Odin will gain one level every time the FATE is completed successfully, or lose one level if the FATE is failed.
When reduced to ~5% health, he will begin charging his ultimate attack. If adventurers are unable to finish him in time, he will use Zantetsuken, instantly killing everyone still within the boundaries of the FATE. Victory will see adventurers receive Odin's Mantle, a token which can be exchanged for his armor and sword, Zantetsuken, from Rowena's associates in Mor Dhona—five Mantles are required for each piece of equipment. Odin's form changes every time he is defeated to match the appearance of the player who landed the killing blow. He also takes on their name as a subtitle. If the FATE was failed on the previous attempt, Odin will keep the appearance of that player until he is defeated.
One of the primary attractions at the Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festivals in 2014 was a version of Odin re-tuned for eight players in the manner of a "typical" Primal Trial battle. This version of the battle, labeled "Urth's Fount," was added to the game as of Patch 2.5 for the quest "Fear and Odin in the Shroud." During this fight, once Odin's HP reaches about 15%, he will begin casting Shin-Zantetsuken. If he is not defeated before he finishes casting Shin-Zantetsuken, it will deal 99,999 damage to all players, even through invulnerability effects like Hallowed Ground.
Wind-up Odin is a minion the player can acquire as part of the 360 day Veterans Rewards.
A magicite simulacrum of Odin can be summoned in the Deep Dungeon Heaven-on-High, where he will use Zantetsuken to instantly kill any mobs. Unlike the other primals, who only deal high to low damage to bosses, Odin is capable of instantly killing every boss as well.
Non-Final Fantasy guest appearances[]
Phantasy Star Online 2[]
The Final Fantasy XIV incarnation of Odin appears as an "Emergency Code: Duel" boss enemy in the Japanese version of the game as part of collaboration agreement between Square Enix and Sega. This Odin is based on the battle of Odin's appearance at Urth's Fount. He has a variety of attacks, like his Gungnir and Sanngetal. Much like in Final Fantasy XIV, he will begin casting Shin-Zantetsuken when he nears defeat, and the player must defeat him before he finishes casting it, or face total annihilation and failure of the quest. While the original quest to fight him was limited-time only, he still appears randomly in Multi-Party Areas, similar to how he appears in FATES, and a teleporter to his Urth's Fount battle may still rarely appear when finishing certain quests. When he appears in Urth's Fount, he will be helmeted, but when he appears in a Multi-Party Area he will have the head of a Phantasy Star Online 2 character, mimicking his behaviour in FATEs. In both versions of the battle, the "FATE JOINED" message, jingle and sound effects will appear instead of "Emergency Code: Duel" message and voice over.

Etymology[]
Odin (from Old Norse Óðinn) is a widely revered god. In Norse mythology, from which stems most of our information about the god, Odin is associated with healing, death, royalty, the gallows, knowledge, battle, sorcery, poetry, frenzy, and the runic alphabet, and is the husband of the goddess Frigg.
In Germanic mythology,
