Mine obsidian blade shall split atwain the threads of thy future, whilst its crimson fuller shalt channel the lifeblood of thy past. Now wail as thy soul is bestrewn across the plains of Valhalla!

Odin while using Zantetsuken

Odin is a celestial avatar and is also the name of a server in Final Fantasy XI. The celestial avatar of darkness, Odin is formally known as the "Dark Divinity". Odin was once a sleeping god, like the other celestial avatars, but after the beastmen's attempts to harness his power, he now roams Vana'diel free. Odin's nemesis is Alexander, the "Light Divinity". Odin plays a key role through many of Final Fantasy XI's stories, including Treasures of Aht Urhgan, Wings of the Goddess, Rhapsodies of Vana'diel, and The Voracious Resurgence.

History[]

Millennia past, Odin saw the vigor in the race of the Galka, after one of their own battled their way to the top of Valhalla. As a result, Odin rewarded the Galka race with the gift of reincarnation. Nearly 900 years ago, Odin battled and defeated the iron colossus Alexander in a cataclysmic event known as Ragnarok. Some time later, the beastmen tried to harness Odin's power, resulting in the destruction of his proto-crystal and his full essence being freed to roam Vana'diel. This set him apart from the other celestial avatars who had their being housed inside their proto-crystal, and could only be called forth in their entirety through a Full Summoning, as Kuraha-Baruha had summoned Fenrir for the Crystal War.

Hast Thou Not Sated Thy Rage?

Odin's question to Luzaf

Raogrimm, the talekeeper of the Galka, was overwhelmed by the evil that he was able to see within the past. A Hume woman, Cornelia, was able to calm the rage that seethed within Raogrimm, so he was never overwhelmed. They had formed a bond thanks to their joint membership in the Mythril Musketeers. Raogrimm and Ulrich, another member of the musketeers, found themselves together among the snowdrifts. For some time Ulrich had been quietly nursing a grudge with his companion. He was disgusted by the Galka's sympathy for the beastmen and embarrassed to admit that the talekeeper was more skilled with a blade. Raogrimm also shared a forbidden romance with Cornelia when Ulrich wanted her for himself. Brimming with jealousy and influenced by the dark energies of Xarcabard, Ulrich attacked Raogrimm without warning.

Quickly incapacitated, Raogrimm could only ask why his friend would commit such treachery. Ulrich replied that he had never liked the talekeeper. He moved to deal a killing blow but Cornelia arrived and threw herself on the point of Ulrich's sword. Horrified at having run her through, Ulrich fled in search of the rest of the party.

Raogrimm held Cornelia's dying body and wondered why she would sacrifice herself to protect him. With her last breath she reminded her love that there were people who needed him. He despaired as her life faded. Being overwhelmed with rage, Odin granted the power of the Shadow Lord to him, kicking off the Crystal War, and the subsequent conflicts of the returning Shadow Lord as the adventurer began working for the nations.

In Treasures of Aht Urhgan, Odin granted his power to those he deems worthy, effectively making them his servants. In the Empire of Aht Urhgan, there was an old prophecy about a coming clash between Odin and Alexander in the next Ragnarok. Towards these ends, Odin granted his power to a servant named Luzaf, Prince of the Ephramad, two hundred years after he and his ship, the Ashu Talif, were destroyed. Luzaf and his crew, being given a second chance at life, set their sights on Aht Urhgan, the empire responsible for destroying his home of Ephramad.

Unbeknownst to Luzaf, Razfahd the grand Vizier of Aht Urhgan was attempting to revive the long-lost Alexander. Odin used Luzaf's hatred for Aht Urhgan to bring him closer to Razfahd to begin the new Ragnarok and wage war against Alexander. However, Odin's plan was hindered by Aphmau and her attempts to open Luzaf's eyes regarding his own hatred. Right before the battle between the celestial avatars, Luzaf and Razfahd were able to prevent the conflict.

As told in Wings of the Goddess, Lilisette lived through an alternate timeline of Vana'diel where the Crystal War never ended and no one was strong enough to defeat the Shadow Lord. As a result, of the perpetual agony that Lilisette saw, she forged a pact with Odin to face the Shadow Lord on even terms. This pact gave Lilisette access to a fraction of Odin's power, the result being the woman known as Lady Lilith.

As revealed in Rhapsodies of Vana'diel, Odin's clash with Alexander, along with his perpetual antagonizing, had all been done to repel the Cloud of Darkness from Vana'diel, and protect the world. In The Voracious Resurgence, it was revealed that Odin had been collecting souls for millennia in preparation for the coming conflict with Chaos, an ancient terrestrial avatar from before the Great Meltdown.

Name Level MP Requirements Effect
Zantetsuken 75 All MP Astral Flow Uses up all the Summoner's MP and has a chance to instantly KO normal monsters. Against Notorious Monsters, it deals damage of around 10-20% of the NMs current HP, but caps at 9999 damage under normal circumstances. Zantetsuken is one of the few known player abilities to cap at 9999 damage. Players' damage is capped ten times higher at 99999.

Etymology[]

In Germanic mythology, Odin (from Old Norse Óðinn) is a widely revered god. In Norse mythology, from which stems most of our information about the god, Odin is associated with healing, death, royalty, the gallows, knowledge, battle, sorcery, poetry, frenzy, and the runic alphabet, and is the husband of the goddess Frigg.
