Attacks with eidolon Odin.
Description
Odin's Sword is a support ability in Final Fantasy IX for Dagger that ensures Odin's summoning is not wasted if his Instant Death fails; he will do non-elemental damage instead. Odin's Sword takes 5 Magic Stones to equip.
Obtained[]
Odin's Sword is learned from Ancient Aroma for 50 AP, found in Ipsen's Castle. The player must solve the puzzle of the rotating tablet near the elevator to the mirror room. When prompted, Zidane is required to examine, push, pound, think, push, think, try something drastic, and rest to flip the wall and gain access to a new area . This opens up a door in the dungeon's entry foyer, directly to the left of the first door the party entered. The new passage leads to a large glowing sword with three ledges and two pots.
A voice within the room whispers, Fight the flow of time, implying the pots must be picked up and placed on the next ledge counterclockwise from their present location. After both pots are rotated thrice, the electricity within the blade will fill one pot, from which the Ancient Aroma may be collected.
Mechanics[]
When Eidolon Odin's instant death attack fails while Odin's Sword ability is active, his summoning will deal damage to the enemy. The attack does more damage the fewer Ores the player has in the inventory. When randomly summoned in Dagger's Trance, Odin does non-elemental damage, whether or not Odin's Sword is equipped. Damage is calculated as it follows:
- Long animation:
- Base = ( Summon's Power + 100 - Ore Amount ) - Target's Magic Defense
- Bonus = Magic + RndMOD ( [ ( Level + Magic ) / 8 ] + 1 )
- Damage = Base * Bonus
- Short animation:
- Base = ( Summon's Power + 100 - Ore Amount ) - Target's Magic Defense
- Bonus = Magic + RndMOD ( [ ( Level + Magic ) / 8 ] + 1 )
- Damage = [ ( Base * Bonus ) * 2 ] / 3
Odin's summon power is 45.
With Odin's Sword, Odin is usually slightly stronger than even Ark (although damage decreases as one obtains more Ore) and costs less to summon. In the full summoning animation, Odin uses his sword to deliver the attack, but in the shorter one, the spear Gungnir simply drops from the sky (even if the attack is still called Zantetsuken).
Use[]
With Odin's Sword active, Odin is always beneficial to summon, even against bosses. Odin can be a very strong summon, and one of Dagger's best eidolons.
If the player is using Dagger as a damage-dealer, it is worth equipping Odin's Sword. The damage-dealing attack is stronger the fewer Ores the player has in the inventory, while the chance of instant death is higher the more Ores the player has. The player can decide on whether they want higher damage with Odin's Sword, or a higher chance of Instant Death, and adjust their Ore inventory accordingly.
