The Ochu, also seen in the original NES translation as the Ocho, is an enemy in the original Final Fantasy. They are weak to lightning-based spells. Like many of their equivalents in later games, the Ochu's attacks tend to cause bad status effects; here, they are poisonous. The player can find these, along with their palette swap, in all the rivers along the world. They are not that hard to defeat, but they are harder than some common enemies, like Piranhas. However, some consecutive Lighting attacks from mages and physical attacks will kill it.

Ochu vs Warrior

A Warrior of Light fighting an Ochu by jumping inside its mouth to attack it.

As many things in the Final Fantasy series, a lot of monsters, themes, and storylines, like crystals are repeated in many games. The Ochu is one of them. Making their first debut in Final Fantasy for the NES, they reappeared in many games, like Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy IX. Its appearance, from the original game, hasn't varied that much. It's appearance being normally a plant type enemy with a big mouth and two big tentacles.

The Ochu greatly resembles the Otyugh monster from Dungeons and Dragons. The only difference is that the Otyugh, despite being a large three-legged mouth with one tentacle and one eye on a stalk, is not a plant. further supporting this is the Neochu enemy sounding suspiciously like the Neo-Otyugh variant.
